Thete is a health and safety requirement to extinguish all naked flames within 5 metres of the torch, should be fun watching one guy trying to relght it whilst the h&s bod sprays him with an extinguisher.

Will go through ford on Wednesday 30th May, no doubt it will be in the E&S, or the Snoozetetter on Thurs, so we will be told the whole full route and itinery. :)

Line the streets for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic Flame as it passes through the villages of Gnosall, Haughton and Stafford town centre on Wednesday 30 May.​
The first time you will get to see the Flame in Stafford Borough is in the village of Gnosall at 4.52pm on Wednesday 30 May.​

I'm really excited. So much so that I had a dream that I forgot my camera and then got there after the torch had gone. The problem will be choosing where to see it - Newport, Gnosall, Haughton or Stafford. Although Stafford will be packed - and they'll not only make you pay for parking but fine you when you can't leave the car park because the roads are blocked. So not Stafford. We got a letter this morning telling us that the torch would be coming and advising us to have a think. Patronising wombats.

I've also had that letter* from the Borough Council and my thoughts were a little stronger than that...!

*I imagine that that letter has been sent to all addresses within the borough - it doesn't even give the vaguest details of the route so that you might wish to consider the effects that this disruptive commercial extravaganza might have on your ability to raise the money that you can 'give' to them so that they can just chuck it away on letters that tell you bugger all..

I'm so glad you said that! I was furious when I opened it. They'd spent all that money on postage to do NOTHING but patronise us. They didn't even include a hint of the route, timings or road closures that would have helped us to follow their advice and think about stuff! It seemed to have been written by a twelve-year-old who, even now, is still frantically shredding the vital second sheet of paper (s)he forgot to enclose. Db gave all the information, above, which SHOULD have been in the letter. It is quite horrifying that such foolish people clearly think that they know best.

At least it's funny - my first post on the Forum was about a letter from the Council inviting me to attend an event in the past.

Whilst fury is quite a reasonable response, I find that thinking 'at least I'm not them' brings the blood pressure down a bit.

I'm just off to see a house-bound chap in his eighties who will be very concerned about the effect this will have on his carers' routine - I might advise him to 'keep up to date using twitter' - just for a (very brief) laugh.

Anyone else underwhelmed but the though of watching somone carry the Olympic torch through Stafford or am I the only miserable old git not get excited by it?

You are not alone - but, I'm hoping for nice weather on the day, so that I can bugger off somewhere well away from all the commercialised hype.

Make sure the 'buggering off' doesn't involve any roads or motorised transport from ~ 4pm on the day. Otherwise you'll be going buggering nowhere.
