[Wed 30 May 2012] Olympic Torch in Stafford

Jonah

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
I can't get excited about the London Olympics. I would have rather seen the World Cup or European Championships staged in this country. It would be more about the country and less about London, which in my view, gets far too much funding anyway compared to the rest of the country (I have no figures to back that statement up, its just a feeling).

I may try and see the flame but as it's coming in from Haughton and then heading north it is the wrong side of town for me.

Well according to my old mate Gilbert the town centre will be 'locked down' as our american cousins would say, big news is the closure of the station car-park and the tesco car-park although tesco may circumvent this be opening up a route in/out via friars terrace. Seems the town centre part of the route will be barriered throughout overall it could be a good chance to see yourself on the telly...........

The council sent out a letter. The only thing missing was where the event was taking place and what roads etc.

Well folks, this will just be the start of it! Prepare to become totally overwhelmed by it, till Xmas! Wall to wall in/on the media!
Despite my 'Grumpy Old Man' monica, I will revel in absoluteley everything Olympic. It is a shame I haven't made a more conserted effort to get tickets. Drove to Barcelona in 92 with 'The Venerable Mrs Seed' and two friends. Ferry to Santander, across the Pyranees, trip of a life time. Saw some of the events life in the stadium, and all the UK winners on a variety of tellies in Northern Spain, Southern France! As the Athletics expert! I was detailed to pick the likely British winners before we chose which of the tickets to go for! We had access to them all via a friend who works for the BBC, but accomodation was expensive, and we wanted to leave time to explore Barca, so opted for 3 of the best, (according to the expert!:tumbleweed:) ! Saw the last day, and the two before the penultimate day! Missed Sally and Linford, in the stadium, but did see Backley and the 4x4 get their Bronzes.

All in all :?: watching a tinpot event live, with the cost of accomodation,:ohno: I'll be happy with the gogglebox, and the welcoming the torch on foot Less than a mile from my door!:yay: can't wait!

I will be abroad, but I probably would have craned my neck a little to see yon torch pass through. I am not an olympics naysayer, am looking forward to it and may get a stylish small flag on plastic stick and put it on my bike to show patriotism. Possibly not the small flag, but otherwise all other points are factually correct.

I have decided that I will drive to Newport with my bike in the back of the car. The hope is that I will be able to see it there and take some pictures, then by dint of using the country lanes and railway line, get there in time to see it pass through Gnosall and Haughton as well. Unless, of course, they would allow Flossietoo on a folding bicycle to precede the procession on the A518. I suspect that might not be the image they are after.

Will be away thankfully, although probs wouldn't disturb us too much in sunny Eccy. On the subject of the games, does anyone else feel that there should be one dedicated TV channel for events of this type leaving other channels unmolested?

Barcellona certainly made the most of it. The city used it to raise its profile, improve infastructure, and make a massive boost in Tourism; not that it was doing badley! It had so much to visit already, it certainly put them in the international shop front! I am sure it will do the same for London :britain:(I'm praying really, its all going far too well for me at present, apart from the few pessimists, ((yes they are not just on here!;) We are interantional experts in PESSIMISM in the UK! I hope we are as good at organising an international sporting event, and coping with the infastructure)))

'HOW TO CATCH CARP' Sounds like one of those embarassing diseases.
"Nasty case of carp you've got there Mr Brown, where've you been putting it this time?"
