Flash floods engulf Stafford, Stone and Rugeley
A COLOSSAL thunder storm brought motorists to a standstill when just 90 minutes’ rainfall caused devastating floods.
Scores of motorists broke down attempting to negotiate deep areas of standing water on the main roads across South Staffordshire.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service received more than 170 calls during the storm and had to rescue two workmen stranded on the roof of their van in Codsall.
South Staffordshire Water was inundated with reports of suspected burst water mains.
A company spokesman said: “We went out to investigate a number of reports of this nature, but water filtering back out onto the roads was the result of underground drains backing up and forcing storm water out.”
Motorist reported water saturating the pavement on Wildwood Road, Stafford, with one resident’s paving being physically lifted off their driveway.
West Midlands Ambulance Service crews deemed several main roads, including the A34, ‘impassable’ and had to find alternative routes into Cannock and Rugeley.
However, paramedics did not report having to deal with any injuries caused by the floods.
Highways teams have been working to tackle surface flooding across the Stafford area.
County council highways leader Mike Maryon has urged motorists to ‘take care’ while the water is cleared.
He said: “Unfortunately the wet weather is persisting and is heavy at times, which can cause us problems.
“These are busy times for our highways teams as they work hard to ensure roads are passable and blocked gullies cleared.
“We would ask people to bear with us where there is flooding and potential obstructions in roads. We are making every effort to keep Staffordshire moving.
“In the meantime, people should take extra care when travelling and alert us to problems in their area by calling the main county council number 0300 111 8000.”
Education chiefs have reported no school closures caused by the rainfall.

My whole garage flooded because most of the rainwater from our street ends up coming down my drive and the drain wasn't coping with so much water gushing down. It was nearly up to my kitchen door step which is at the far end of the garage when I went in to my freezer.
That was bad enough ,so I can imagine how people must feel when their actual house floods.

That happened in Germany just before I lived there back in 2003. I thought a gang was going around denting all the cars, but it turned out that everyone who was out on the autobahn that day ran into a hailstorm that dented their cars. My boss at the time had a brand new Porsche 911 the day before it happened. The next day it was written off!
Luckily the insurance companies did cover most cars for this, but the year after, a special clause was written into the policy where hail is now not covered.

I've been watching the BBC & Met office on-line weather forecast and at first it looked like 7pm, when they arrive at school, was light rain-now changed this last hour to heavier rain!
Everything seems to be going wrong for them.......Bloody Limo company they booked with seems to be a scam ,with website now saying 'ceased trading'.(National Limousine Hire if anyone else booked with them.). Now this weather-Aaaaarrrrgh
