The Greyhound Inn at Burston / Sandon.

well, seeing as all the other greyhounds seem to be getting an airing of late, i thought i might as well mention another one!

went to the greyhound inn at burston on saturday for my ol' dear's birthday.. without question one of the finest meals i have had in a long, long time!

i had steak & ale pie, which came with the obligatory chips and peas.. the pie was divine - more like a stew with a puff pastry lid on top, rather than a stodgy shortcrust pastry effort.. everything about it was gorgeous - even the peas! lol.. i've never had peas that tasted so.. well.. pea-ey! lol..

the variety on offer was impressive.. there were 10 of us in total, having things like chicken tikka, ribs, lasagne, duck, etc.. every single one of us cleaned our plates and all commented on the unusually high standard of food.. really can't recommend it enough!

Me and Mrs WRM had the steak and ale pie out there a few months back - and likewise thought it was superb quality food.

I would keep quiet about that, in case Mrs WMR finds out...

Excellent. Where's Burston?
Between Sandon and Stone on the A51 - it looks a bit like a few houses in a lay-by - on the left going North just out of Sandon.

yeah this pub has always had a good rep without many people knowing about it, might have to try it again soon

Called in last night for tea, was expecting great things after reading reviews but TBH the best I could say was that it was OK. Had two steaks, 16oz T-Bone and a rump. My T-Bone was cooked as I asked, nice and pink but lacked flavour (frozen perhaps?). Mrs T's steak was a bit on the dry side, onion rings were those frozen rings of crispy onion flavoured stuff, chips were apparently OK and my new potatoes were tasty. Recently had far nicer, tastier (and cheaper) steaks in Stafford, so probably not worth the drive out there.
As I said, no real complaints but nothing special either.

Anyone of an era to remember the cottage at Burston with all the sculptures in the garden? The amateur sculptor was a distant member of the Flossietoo family and the small girl represented in many of the pieces, a very lovely cousin (whatever kind of cousin it is when it is your mother's cousin - second? First cousin once removed?)

Went there today with a regal personage and had a rather nice burger with salad and actual chips.

The clientele seemed to be definitely of the more senior variety (not counting us, obviously).

I've just been there and had the steak and ale pie with additional mushrooms - however, I was offered the option of chips, baked spud or boiled, so the chips may no longer be obligatory. Your description of 'stew with a puff-pastry lid' is still accurate - as is the assessment of 'divine'. And the peas are still as good.

I do have to say that the staff are absolutely excellent, even though they all look as though they really should be upstairs doing their homework - top notch though, even the lad who felt it necessary to get a less juvenile member of staff to get our top-up drinks* for us, in case we shopped him to the rozzers..

And we finished it off out the back, hassling the pigs, goats, geese, hens,etc....

*Including a rather nice Staropramen...

I have just returned from a cycle trip there for a chicken and mushroom pie, with Florence - and the Stafford Beasts arrived en voiture. Top notch nosh and a most excellent house spaniel.

It may be of interest to some that there is a separated area where dogs seem to be allowed in and customers may sit and eat as well, rather than just exclude dogs from the entire place.

Be prepared to be the youngest person your side of the bar.

i had almost forgotten about this little gem.. i really must take a trip out there again - i've only ever been there twice, which is a crying shame as i dare say it's one of the nicest meals out i've ever had, on both occasions..

Even at Florence-pace, it wasn't much over half an hour on a bike, via Marston and Enson to avoid the more serious hills, so it's well worth taking advantage of the laxer approach to drink-cycling that still applies these days.

I finished off today with the treacle sponge pudding, which was at the absolute optimum temperature, to within a tenth of a degree - borderline painful - spot-on!!

Mr Rex's criticisms above are exactly why I think that it is such a good place. A proper main road pub from forty years ago.
