Who remembers and visited Jollees Cabaret Night club that use to be in Commerce Street, Longton, Stoke?

I visited several times, always had a meal, the place was always full, so with stars such as Cliff Richard, Roy Orbison, Tommy Cooper, Norman Wisdom, Cannon & Ball, Freddie Starr and Cilla Black why / how ever did it close?

There's a piece on it from the BBC here.

As to why something like that closed down, I'd blame "all of the 1980's". Sort of. Britain underwent such huge economic and cultural changes during that decade, some of the more traditional live entertainment were completely wiped out. Upscale Cabaret Clubs like this were the last vestige of Music Hall, which had more-or-less rescinded into the Working Men's Clubs. By the time the 90's rolled around even the Working Men's and Social Clubs had had it.

The same thing happened to burlesque in the US after the second world war, the whole industry vanished almost overnight.

I went to see The Four Tops there and sat right by the stage. When they sang 'Reach out' they reached out and touched my hand :heyhey:

I'm going to make you all feel old but my parents used to go there. They watched the likes of Bruce Forsyth, Jimmy Tarbuck, Frank Carson and I'm sure they saw some groups and other types of act there too. I did go later on, but by that time it was renamed Shelleys and catered for a slightly different crowd.:mario:

Whilst on this nostalgia trip who also remembers the El Pussy night club down the left side of Jollees in Chancery Lane?

Wasn't the BDO Dart held there each winter? Reading through Sid Waddell's biography, he mentions Jollies with fond memories.

I saw Sham 69 in Jollees - easily the worst gig that I ever went to, by far.

The support band were Section 25 and they were fairly good..

Back in the late 1970's I worked at Jollees. Initially weighting on serving drinks, a bit of bar work, and for a while doing the lighting (spot light operator).

I worked at Jollees too.

I worked for the photographer who used to go and take your photo.

It was me that would then try and sell you a keyring or some such whimsy with your photo of you having a good time.

Oh really really.....happy days.
