Plenty of slightly soggy news crews outside the hospital if anyone wants a fleeting moment of fame

Admin Edit: Posts moved to new thread, given the prominence and importance of today's news story.

"Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has had his decision to reduce services at a major hospital declared unlawful and quashed by the High Court.

Mr Justice Silber ruled Mr Hunt acted outside his powers when he announced casualty and maternity units at Lewisham Hospital would be downgraded."

Victory for Lewisham - lets hope it is a good news day on hospital services

Excellent news.

I did see the news crews outside about an hour ago when I was driving up the Weston Road. They looked very soggy and miserable indeed!

Yeah, cos when you're a seriously ill child the best thing to help you is a trip up the A34....

innit - of all the people to turn away, surely "seriously ill children" would be last one your list?!?!

from the official report linked in my previous post:

The idiots at the TSA said:
The proposed changes mean:
  • „Accident and Emergency will remain open at Stafford Hospital operating between 8am and 10pm, every day as it does now. The TSAs’ recommendations would facilitate A&E being better staffed with A&E consultants.
  • „An increased choice of consultants and specialists will be available at Stafford and Cannock Chase hospitals.
  • „A greater range of specialties will be available to patients at Stafford Hospital, for example, Orthopedic surgery is to be introduced at Stafford meaning patients who currently go to Cannock Chase for hip replacements, for example, can have their procedures nearer home.
  • „A Frail Elderly Assessment service will be created to provide one-stop assessment for older people and take referrals from a wide range of sources to better meet the needs of the frail elderly.
  • „Beds will be made available at Stafford Hospital for recovering patients, following a spell of inpatient treatment at a specialist hospital, to rehabilitate nearer to home.
  • Children will continue to be assessed at Stafford Hospital’s Paediatric Assessment Unit during its current opening hours of 8am to 10pm. The TSAs are also working with local commissioners to look at establishing a new service which would allow more children to be treated safely and appropriately at home.
  • „Cannock Chase Hospital will continue to offer its present range of services, including rheumatology, and there are plans to enhance services where possible.

Hmmmm not great news but unfortunately largely expected. If this is to happen (and I should imagine if it does there will be many more twists, turns and protests along the way - 2018 is a long way off) then more detail must be provided as to the extra capacity needs of Stoke, they already say they are overstretched, especially in A&E.

If I was the Labour party candidate for Stafford I'd be lobbying Ed Millimetre to confirm that should they win the general election in 2015 that this decision will be completely reversed and that acute services will remain - that would be the way to be an absolute shoe in for an important swing seat come the General Election - bye, bye Le Fraud, close the door on your way out.....

Most definately, assuming you trust a politician to keep their word ;)

This is shocking. I knew it'd be bad, but to get rid of some many vital services is appalling. So now if you're involved in a serious emergency, go into labour, or have a sick child you don't want to be doing it in Stafford.

OH and I have been looking into moving house soon and couldn't decide whether to stay in Stafford or move closer to my family so we have more support when kids come along. This has pretty much made up our mind.

Has anyone had the misfortune yet to see the panel of administrators (weird looking bunch) on the news talking about their recommendations - the bare faced cheek of them to set out their proposals as some sort of great victory for Stafford hospital and that just because both sites are to remain open as little more than a St John's Ambulance, village drop in clinic for cuts, grazes and polo mints this is a massive success.

So that's it, offer us a few crumbs and expect us to be grateful.

Not surprisingly, we have been let down by the people who are supposed to represent us.

And has her ladyship Julie Bailey made any comment yet ??

I still find it bizarre that people fail to direct their venom at elected and former elected and well paid representatives in the first instance, namely the lame David Kidney and Completely lame Jeremy Lefroy, not to mention a whole host of Health Ministers

Some people, a large number of people, appear to have a massive blind/deaf and dumb spot in their make up

A bit like a bag on a carousel going round and round and round but never actually managing to fall off

I've said it before but.....

JB merely pointed out there was a problem, and lets face it there was a problem. The problem has now been rectified, why do people want to shoot the messenger? She has no control over what the government choose to do, only our elected muppet can do that. He can't be arsed, yet nobody blames him? No, lets just bitch at the person who mentioned it first, because everything was lovely and rosy before that happened.

As far back as 2007 I was told, by an A&E nurse, to call her before ever calling an ambulance. The rot had been there for a long time, and the only blame seems to sit with the management in my eyes.

What did you expect? They were hardly going to publish their report and say, 'Hey guys, read this, it's a load of shit'.

There is still lots to play for here, that may yet scupper the current plans. Revelations about the real state of affairs at North Staffs and particularly New Cross, which will doubtless be revealed before long, could well come to Stafford's rescue.
