Development of the new Churchill retirement village and refurbs of the old retirement homes ( ? ) next to it (opposite the retail park that holds Curry's and Wicks etc on) has finally began, only two years later than planned, but hey ho.

Mmm, there has been intermittent work there before, even a tower crane for a few days. I saw the digger in there today, too. Let's see if it continues to fruition.

At least Lionel Blair hasn't died and ruined their long-term advertising hoarding....

I do like the style of vandalism that has been applied to his picture over the two or three years . Somebody made his eyes look like they were boss-eyed by gouging parts of it out and somebody else (same person(s?)) went to the trouble of getting a bit of black masking tape and covering up one of his front teeth. Genius.:stafford:

I'm starting to wonder whether there is a plan to effectively close the town centre and provide space for new housing.

What possible reason is there to shop in Stafford? You don't have to travel very far at all to find pleasant places, where shopping is easy and parking is free.

Close the things we want to visit, fill the town with charity stores and make the town centre as dreary and depressing as possible. Add traffic management that ensures it takes forever to reach the blessed place and recruit a team of wardens to hit you with a fine if, for some unfathomable reason, you stay longer than planned. Then find some hapless wretch to spearhead a Visit Stafford campaign.

What could possibly go wrong?

We should think ourselves lucky, take a look at the car crash which is Wolverhampton, the mismanagement over there is bordering on criminal.
I certainly agree with your points though.
Maybe I'm getting old but I have more concern over the sizeable chav element in and around the town.
