Best Pub in Stafford?

Ok, I started this thread http://www.staffordforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=678

and then wondered, as subject title, which is the best pub in Stafford? After living in a small Somerset village for three years and being spoilt by having three pubs, I finally settled on one of the three as being my "local". Decision made on the following. Only in the order that I can think of, not importance.

1. Friendly, welcoming and jovial bar staff.
2. Landlord/lady/staff that remember your name & or drink upon next visit.
3. Dog friendly. (A man and his well behaved dog should be allowed in the premises.)
4. A Pool table.
5. Reasonably priced jukebox (NOT 50p a track or a quid to download nonsense)
6. An ability to forgive & forget drunken stupidity as being drunken stupidity.
7. Karaoke
8. Cleanish
9. Friendly customers, good atmosphere, etc
10. Oh and of course, very reasonable prices.
11. Last and not least, the occasional lock in!!!

I would also add skittle alley, but I'm not too sure if skittles is even played in Staffs, perhaps I can be enlightnened on this point!

Until the new landlord arrived I used to enjoy a few in the Lynton. Got a lot of friends there. Now it looks dreadful and some of the folk drinking there appear to be straight out of a Vic and Bob sketch. Not many of the old faces there either.

In terms of town I go to the Bankhouse a fair bit but that's because my mate runs it. It's ok I guess. Other than that my drinking mainly takes place in Manchester since that's where I am most weekends. I daren't go anywhere near the two pubs near me - The Ricky Arms and The Royal Oak. :)

Edit: Always enjoyed a few in the Coach and Horses. But be warned you do get some rather 'tasty' characters in there. All good fun though.

I think my list for assessing the quality of a pub may be somewhat different:
1. Quality of the ale on draught
2. Quality of the 2nd ale on draught...

Cuffy is the new skill
if its 'proper pubs' youre after, then the spittal brook is also pretty good in a traditional way. its a bit out the town, but good place to hook up with yer mates.

Ah yes the Spittal Brook. Used to be the first port of call on my way into town.

Sorry Cookie, not a fan of the Railway.

Probably the Greyhound opposite the jail then.

The ale in the Railway's not bad + you've got the people, including many a forumite.

i just like it coz the landlord hasnt barred me yet, despite my best efforts.

which ones the spittal brook? is it the one underneath the lichfield road bridge, by the railway track and possibly used to be called the crown?

ive never been, but i used to work with a lass who always drank there early doors.

The Kings Arms on Peel Terrace is a pretty good pub. Wiped the locals asses on new years eve, winning all the beer tokens in the pub quizzes.

it's the one near (old) b&q, which used to be called "the crown" but the landlord is a brit-hating mick and changed the name because she didn't want to be associated with our monarchy :teef:

It's a celtic thing with you lot in't it? :/ Although changin the pub name was abit daft.. has to be said

I'm sayin nothing for fear of getting grief from doc about "what nationality I am this week"

But to save any confusion I am 100 percent celtic I can tell ya that

The Railway for me every single time. Been drinking in there for years now and it almost feels like an extension of my own living room... Actually, thinking about it i probably spend more time in there than i do in my own living room!

my family's from portadown, so i'm genetically bred to hate republicans ;)

i'm kidding, i'm kidding!! i couldn't give two hoots where you're from and what you believe in.. as long as you're not a hippy..

I know those two - in fact her fella (if she's still with him) used to be really good mates with my old man. I don't think they run it anymore, could be wrong though.

Regarding pubs.. trouble is they all change!

Criteria is really based on a mixture of what everyone else has said

1) Decent beer
2) Decent landlord
3) Decent clientèle
4) Decent music

Trouble is it's damn hard to find one ..

In the past have favoured a list from the nelson, bird, telegraph,Castle Tav Tap and spile bra and starter chains(joxers now) etc etc..even Weatherspoons and the island ( although to be honest the island has gone way downhill and what's with the lack of cleaning in the place? It is just plain scummy in there these days and they keep running out of beer! So I /we have binned it .Shame as its on our way home from town but its just plain nasty in there and they cant be bothered to fix the loo seats either which can be a bit embarrassing if you are caught short for a number 2 after a skin full!

but I just like a decent boozer where you can sup nice beer talk to nice people who aren't too arsed about wearing the latest shiny shirt or slip of a top and drinking the latest coolest alcopop or bottle of larger ..Seems the railway is now getting popular but when we lived in that end of town everyone went to the castle tav and very few went to the railway ..well they did for the variety of different whiskeys available ..only thing that I think the railway is missing is "space" and seating for larger crowds ..but sure someone will change that until the next "in" pub opens or becomes popular for some reason or another

Just got back after a very pleasant evening in the Railway, thanks to all who suggested it. Friendly and definately not an "old man's pub" but what I would call a drinkers pub for drinking in. A wet pub. Cons, no pool table :-( large screen with footy on (but that's very popular up here isn't it) umm and that's about it! way hayy I'm in Stafford!!!!!
