I'm afraid I reeeeaaly love cheese, too. It's the reason I haven't gone vegan. I don't use milk at all but would miss cheese and honey.

At the risk of getting shouted down here, can I ask, why did those that are Vegetarians decide to live by this lifestyle?
No, I have no intention of giving up meat, tho everyone is entitled to their own opinion of why I should.

I think from the previous discussion it was mainly about eating a more healthy diet, and better use of the land.

I wouldn't dream of shouting you down, Glam!

I'd never try to persuade anyone to become vegetarian, or do that petty thing of saying "You're vegetarian but you eat x!" I am married to a meat eater and there is meat in the fridge.

That said, it is a hugely important thing for me. I feel revolted by the thought of eating meat. I have a recurring dream that I have accidentally eaten meat, then wanted to drink bleach to clean my insides. I just don't think that I have the right to cause an animal to be killed and hung in a butcher's shop.

So, not logical but not likely to change!

I have been vegetarian for around 35 years. I don't press my views on others, I really don't mind if restaurants or dinner hosts can only give me a plate of vegetables, all I ask is for the very aggressive meat eaters who really think they can argue me into eating a burger at a barbecue, to 'burger' off.

Our personal reason is due to the unnecessary cruelty of all the animals in the intensive factory farming system, plus the inefficient use of the worlds resources; mainly the first one though.

I'm pretty sure that had organic free range meat ( like those lucky pigs that I see free range on my way to Tamworth), I would have gone free range meat, but this type of meat was hard to find in the early 80's. Couldn't go back to eating meat now and have reared a whole family as veggie's, healthiest kids and adults we know :)

In answer to the OP, sometimes it's the simple meals:

Cauliflower cheeses,

Mixed bean Chili with garlic bread or in a wrap with sour cream and avocado

Scrambled eggs, (only free range of course)

Egg & chips :)

Falafel, sour cream, spicy cous cous and chopped salad in a warm pitta bread

Home mede onion soup and crusty bread

Green lentil lasagne (just use tinned lentils instead of mince)

Spag Bol, with quorn mince

Pureed red pepper (black skins of first) sauce on a Sharwoods noodles with grated cheese

One tip I've found with quorn though is to use significantly less quantity than you would if using mince, dunno why, but less is more!

Ooh Kyoto you've made me hungry. When are you opening a veggie cafe?

Ha ha. Thanks. Er .................I wasn't planning on opening one, but I would be ecstatic if a veggie cafe opened in Stafford. I can just imagine how much money I would spend in there already. Business opportunity anyone!

For me.... I was brought up vegetarian, then went vegan in 1997 - for moral reasons. Since then, I've done a lot in terms of clarifying my thinking on it. In short, humans have no actual need of consuming meat or dairy and the fact that it might taste nice cannot form justification for exploiting animals and killing them. The sentience of animals demands that they are not treated as property and means they have an interest in living out their lives. Being vegan means rejecting violence and discrimination against others. We (virtually) all believe that animals matter morally and that should extend to all species, and a recognition that we cannot exploit them for human purpose.

On vegetarianism - it has been mentioned about animals not being killed and unnecessary cruelty. It is important just to quickly point out dairy and eggs are no different: dairy cows end up in the same slaughterhouse as beef cattle; calves are killed either shortly after birth, or a few months for veal; male chicks are gassed / crushed as they are of no value to the egg industry. There is just as much death and cruelty in dairy and eggs as meat - which links to above reason for being vegan. Before anyone says anything, I am happy to discuss this aspect on a separate thread rather than this one.

All I'm going to say to that is, a pig, chicken, cow or sheep is as alive, living, feeling and individual as your cat(s) :)

Re eggs, I didn't use to eat them. But now I keep my own hens. The birds are happy and living totally natural, free-range lives. A bit too free range to be honest - they prefer laying their eggs in the hedge and the spaniels and I have to go on an egg hunt every day. The eggs are infertile, so would not develop into chicks. Loads nicer than anything you can buy in the shops. Win, win. Or cheep cheep.

One of my most vivid memories contains a basket of chickens.

The battle for supremacy was both epic and brutal.

Vicious animals, chickens.
