A few weeks ago I took my poorley laptop to a small independant computer shop in Stafford. Now for the record I am no computer geek hence the need for help from those who possess the 'knowledge'.

Problems with my laptop was a worn keyboard and I suspected overheating that kept causing it to shut down.

A week or so after depositing my machine at the shop I was contacted and informed a new keyboard had been fitted and its cooling fan cleaned. :yay: or so I thought.

As soon as I got it home I plugged it in and :ohno:but it still kept shutting down, however :) it had a nice new or nearly new keyboard.

I returned it to the shop and sometime later I was contacted and informed the problem was the hard drive.
I collected my laptop to consider whether to have a new hard drive fitted or cut my losses and buy a new lap top.

I then noticed on this forum advertisements for WMR Computers and after viewing their no fix no fee rates and prices I thought I'd give them a chance.

I dropped off my laptop with Wayne the owner and a few hours later he contacted me saying that the hard drive was fine and as it was still running hot he doubted if the fan had been cleaned.

A day or two later I picked up my laptop running fine and with various software upgrages added :bravo: Wayne I only wish I'd taken it to you first.

sounds as if the shop just gave an airblow around the fan instead of taking it out and cleaning any fluff n stuff. if that was the case and WMR found it, i'd have took it back into the shop to show them what they missed, while the shop had a few customers.

without seeing it, i'm not sure why they suggested it was the hdd. well done WMR

In order to help other forumites who might make the same mistake, could you name the place you originally took your laptop to?

Thanks for such a warm feedback. For those reading this, the hard drive was thoroughly tested and working (no bad sectors or smart errors). I personally find it disgusting that such places tell a customer their hard drive needs replacing when it clearly doesn't, just for the sake of getting a sale!

Mind you, they can carry on operating the way they do. I lose count of how many customers I gain through these kinds of experiences with such shops - so I'll take this opportunity to thank them for the customers they send my way...
.... and recommend their families, friends and colleagues
... who then recommend theirs!
1 such customer can turn into many more :)

The computer shop is located in Eastgate Street, this was the first and LAST time I will use it, when I told my brother about my experience he informed me he'd also used that shop and had bad service and when he complained the owner used every excuse in the book.

I've heard it mentioned by a few of my customers that they've been spoken to with very bad attitude there. That's no way to do business, surely.

Wayne, my brother commented on the owners attitude when he tried to speak to the owner after they'd failed to sort out his problem.

heard it so many times myself. I think they used to take £50 from you as you left it to be checked out, then when they got around to it, you used to pay the extra for the 'fix'. or take it back as is minus they're fee for checking (even if you told them what was wrong). I don't know if they still take a deposit as everyone I know stays well clear.
I only fix friends and relatives pc/laptop but seem to be doing their friends too. I don't charge, only for parts with receipts shown, but I only do it as a hobby. i'm not here to take any business away from WMR as that's his living.

Blimey. Takes me right back several years to when they had my simple swap a hard drive repair sitting around for about three weeks, got stroppy with me when I became impatient, then tried to give it back without the power supply, trying to pretend that they'd never had it.
