Hi

Not sure what type of tradesman I need. We recently had the man hole cover up in our back yard and I noticed the clay pipes that take the waste water away are all cracked so I assume leaking intp the ground. Can anyone tell me what type of tradesman I need to replace (not line) these pipes please? Secondly, can anyone recommend anyone?

Thanks

Is the pipe shared with another household at any point until it reaches the main drain? If it is the Severn Trent will sort it for free, even if the problem lies on your property. If it isn't then you'll need to pay someone. I'd check that out first as it could end up saving you a shed load of money,

It goes from my back yard to my neighbours back yard and then on to somewhere unknown to me!! So it is shared, but I think it's only my bit that's end of life, think they've already renewed their bit.............not certain though. Thanks for the tip, I'll try Severn Trent for starters and see what they see. Cheers

Edit:

Just checked and judging from this image, the bit on my yard is my responsibility, as only my waste goes down it, but the bit on my neighbours property is Severn trent, cos it's shared by me and the neighbour??? So anyone know a contractor who would do a good jon of this work please?

Oh well, it was worth a try.

If the problem you have isn't an emergency and is likely to cost quite a but to fix (ie £20 or more), you could always join one of the many domestic insurance companies (we are with Homeserve and they've always been good re our regularly blocking drain), wait for the 30 day cooling off period to pass and then claim.

Just a thought.

regularly blocking drain
Karcher do a very effective drain cleaner.

The nozzle has rear-facing jets and, so, pulls itself along whilst blasting the pipe totally clean. Seventy quid in Screwfix, I think.

I've considered drilling a small forward-facing hole to assist with passage through a total blockage.

I thought the problem was Cracked drains, not Blocked drains?

It will cost a small fortune either way.

Yeah thanks for that!!! It won't cost anything if I can't find somone decent to fix it :) Far as I can see it's about 4 m's of pipe and digging up the soil to get to it, I can't see how it will be THAT expensive. It's only 2K for a new roof.......!! Having said that I actually have no idea how much it will be.................

I could, but my moral code of right and wrong sadly won't allow it. To me that's fraud. Others may think differently!

I think Big G was replying to my post about blocked drains.
Ahh sozzard...

We also get regularly blocked drains (due to the neighbours love of shoving baby wipes down the loo). We usually end up calling out 'Bates' & paying a hundredish bar... stupidly Ive never thought of joining Homeserve or the like...

Hmm maybe im wrong.....sure I had heard horror stories about the expense of having home drains replaced :(

Is it all definatly leaking (have you got a stinking quagmire?) or do they just 'look' cracked?

They just looked cracked, everything was flowing correctly!

My door-slamming neighbours also flush huge quantities of wet-wipes down the bog, blocking our communal drain - Severn Trent have threatened all sorts over it, but have done nothing.

Being an employee of said company I would recommend it, as long as you are a homeowner etc. etc.
We also do fixed price repairs for those not covered, not sure cracked drains are included though.

It might we worth giving Severn Trent a quick ring about it, you may find they will repair.

True. The chaps who actually turn up to do the work are almost always very accommodating and will bend the rules to the maximum in the customer's direction wherever possible.

Clay pipes that have been in place for a while are rarely fully watertight - the joints are usually less than perfect, even if the pipes themselves are still pristine. How much of it can you see?

Severn trent are only responsible if the pipe is shared. Anything serving just your property under your ground is not covered by them. But like already said if it's blocked ring them anyway. Chances are they will still unblock it.

I'm not sure if you have anything to worry about with your cracked pipe. What makes you think the ones below ground need replacing?

Like G said I would imagine most leak.
