Staffordshire Bull - OLD THREAD! Please see note at top of 1st post

(and me! - Ed)
Used to be a regular in the Penny, had my second legal pint in there. Was banned for not drinking enough! Honest! Me and my mates used to go in play on video games and make 3 pints stand all night. As well as spending money on the 2 games machines, we did put some pennies in the Juke Box. Richard, the new landlord had been put in with the brief to sort out the 'problem youngsters'! The landlord before had been very lax with checking if people were 18! The pub was like a youth club. Sally Army came in collecting one night. Had full uniform on, kids thought it was a raid, and were diving out the back door, and even under the tables. Oh how we chuckled! Rich decided to 'deal' us, and when we had a altercation about something minor, he barred us! This was 30 years ago. In fairness we were probably being obnoxious, and the yout' did need sorting out. He made a good job of it, and if I am correct, after being the longest serving landlord in 'Ford he retired last year. I have recently attended a wake there, having been there after the funerals of my father and father-in-law.

It would be a tragedy if it is going to the dogs, and it sounds like it may be struggling. Have been to the Holmcroft tonight with work for a meal, we use it quite a lot, and I believe The Penny has always done ok with food, which I suppose a way estate pubs can stay in business. Holmcroft certainly usually seems busy, and gives the impression it is doing all right. Certainly seems to be slightly tidier than I remember it, and looks in reasonably good order. Mind you last time I was in the Penny a couple of months ago, I wasn't struck by it looking unkempt! Good luck to the old place anyway.

Not for long though I assume as its up for rent?
Yes that is true.
I don't think it will shut down any time soon, I've seen the pub in a worse situation with the previous landlord Ed.
It is a whole lot better since the new owner took on the lease, ie, new windows, refurbed toilets (to a very good standard) juke box, snacks (albeit infrequent!) happy hour, happy bar staff....I could go on.

I applaud your comments Santa's little helper, purely for standing up for a friend. Due to the few clients left in the pub i reserve the right to remain anonymous.

Whilst I will not get into a slanging match - I would like to point out.
- is/was there drugs in the pub - answer yes (witnessed by many ex locals)
- was manageress aware - answer yes and those responsible not barred
- does the manageress open when she feels like it - answer yes
- have there been lockins into early hours - answer yes
- does manageress new house rules go against licensing rules - answer yes
- have there been internal fights / windows smashed - answer yes
- the place IS filthy
- Was any of the above done under previous landlords/ladies - answer no

Many people have decided to not go to staffs bull. A once thriving pub is now likened to a ghost town.

I have also seen the pub up for lease - if it was not correct I'm surprised right move have not removed it. It's still listed. Whether it is a mistake or not I (and others) would like to see the pub change hands and our local get back to being the local pub we all want to go to. With the new housing estate being built this would be a good business for someone that wants to take pride in it.

This is not a one person vendetta against the pub, the evidence and lack of customers speaks for itself.

I am sure you will come back with an attack but I refuse to be drawn in and will not respond to you. I (and those who are not going any more) are entitled to their views as you are too.

People will vote with their feet and pubs like that will get found out and close. Theres plenty of stafford pubs where the local tools have been given free reign and it always results in a loss of business and closure of the pub.

My personal favourite pubs in Stafford (in no particular order) are the Rose & Crown, Sun Inn, Swan, Market Vaults and the Star and Garter (my local).

The Greyhound is also a very good pub, however, whenever I have gone there (which is not very often) it has been very quiet and lacked atmosphere...its also too far to walk from where I live!
