Brummy

Does anyone dislike that Brummy twang, or a thick Brummy accent? I don't think I could cope with it on a daily basis. Am I alone?

I think the Brunei twang is dying out, even good old Black Country is not as prominent as it was. I was in Northamptonshire recently, they have an accent based on Kent, went and shent. Guess what that translates to?

It's strange, when my job took me to other areas of the country I would often be told 'you must be from brum' yet brummies have said I don't sound like them ? On the phone it can be a problem, understanding someone with a broad accent, until you tune in. I have found talking to Glaswegians on the phone quite challenging at times. ;)

Everybody has an accent of some description.

Personally I love them, but I must admit I do have preferences.

Truth is when you live in an area you'll get so used to the local accent you won't even notice it.

No, nothing wrong with accents and I am proud of mine. Are you alone in your snobbery? Probably not, but it is something society could do without.
@Wendywu I sincerely hope you never end up in the hospital where I work. (St. Georges) We have nurses that live in Birmingham and the surrounding areas. We also have people that come from the Potteries, how do you feel about that accent.
While we are on the subject - what sort of an accent do you have?

Having an accent and whether we like them or not, is always a talking point and quite often someone will be offended. I think the best thing to do is to be open minded and embrace the difference. I like all accents; it's a good thing to be different.

When you think about it in more depth, why brummies’ stokies' and staffies' have such a difference in certain words is interesting.

Dialects are linguistic varieties which differ in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar from each other and from Standard English (which is itself a dialect).

Dialects can be usefully defined as "sub-forms of languages which are, in general, mutually comprehensible".[1] British linguists distinguish dialect from accent, which refers only to pronunciation.

So it would seem that the only difference the brummies’ and the stokies and the staffies have is their pronunciation of our language.

Although it’s beyond me why 30 miles down the road should make any difference at all. Come to think of it why 50 or 70 miles down the road should have a different accent is another interesting talking point and maybe not as offensive as saying we don’t like people with different accents.

It reminds me of a line in the C S Lewis Narnia books ‘the dwarfs and for the dwarfs’

Being a Yam Yam it would be hypocritical of me to criticise how anyone else speaks! And find it sad that people should look down at others because of their accents.
I remember back in the 80's going to a pub outside the Bristol City ground (we were either brave or stupid!) and having banter with some locals. 'Youu lart don't arf talk funny' in a broad West Country accent still makes me giggle.

I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend anyone. I can see some people are upset by this thread. And to be honest, I wouldn't want to end up in a Staffordshire hospital ( given the reputation) oh here we go again. Sorry but ii couldn't resist

Looks like I've upset the whole of Staffordshire. I'm terribly sorry for any offence. I'm only having a bit of banter with you. I shall leave now with my tail between my legs.

That wasn't banter it's being a trolling WUM, don't give it out if you can't take it back.

I love regional accent, be it local to Stafford, Geordie, Summerzet etc. Top accent for me is listening to a Scotsman.
And, @Wendywu, you still haven't answered my question. What accent have you got?

I can't understand why an opinion on dialect is trolling. I've said sorry. What's WUM by the way.

Apparently I have an RAF accent, if such a thing exists. And I was born at RAF Cosford, although we moved when I was a baby and have never been back, although I would like to visit sometime. ( unless I get stoned)
