I heard an interesting theory that things like Facebook and Twitter are like games -

Where people collect 'Likes' and 'Friends' - people get addicted to the positive reinforcement when someone praises them or they receive a certain amount of pokes per selfie - or however it works!

I get a daily update on how many people are following him.

I don't have either - I find you really know who your friends are

People always say 'I have 500+ friends on Facebook!'

So? When was the last time you met them and had lunch and a real conversation??

Yes I agree.

I always say..."If you needed help at 3.00 in the morning how many people could you ring up and ask to come round"

The ones that you know would drop everything and come round are your friends.

I don't do face book or twitter or play games on my i fone. I have a real life talking to people and interacting in the real world - virtual life seems a form of escapism which is good and relaxing for a short period of time but it should never replace real life. I can see the positive side of being able to communicate with friend that you went to uni with and friend that you would love to see but they live at the other end of the country. but pick up the fone talk or use the old art form of letter writing. Maybe I'm getting old

If they are grown up, do they not work?

sorry that sounded like how dare you say my kids don't work, but not everyone can work for a.living, some families only have one wage earner, thats me and we all pull together to run a household I wouldn't be without my lovely grown kids who don't go to work. But i would like to spend some more real life quality time with them hence the pc addiction thread

I suppose the PC has replaced the TV in a lot of ways. I imagine years ago people were saying that their children were addicted to watching TV.

A while ago i was trawling through copies of The Staffordshire Advertiser from the 1960's, when there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth about the pernicious anti-social menace we know as Bingo...

Such an archaic view. The two are not mutually exclusive. I dare say the current generation are more sociable than the last. And the last were more sociable than those before them.

I'm guessing a power cut wouldn't go down well then?
That's one way to ensure pure quality miserable family time!

Hit. Nail. Head.

Family time is boring as shit. If the kids don't want to be there then as soon as they don't have to be you won't see them for dust. I'm speaking from experience.

Family time is certainly not boring - its the make up of family life . Time spent talking to your loved ones is warm and funny and full of love.. We like being together perhaps all kids don't want to spend as much time with their parents as the parents would lik,e but there will always be a close bond between a mother father and child unless of course your not direct descendants of the Waltons. Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
My son is 19. He loves his iPhone, iPad and PS4 and spends a lot of time on them. He can also converse properly with us and other people. The two things aren't mutually exclusive.
