Stuff Maplins sells?

Not strictly a Stafford exclusive, but there is one here so people may have an opinion.

Don't know whether it's just me, but in my life I've only bought a handful of things from Maplins, and for good reason: most don't work properly, and their customer service is awful.

Several years ago I bought two bits of software gubbins, so long ago I can't remember what, and neither of them worked. I couldn't get my money back from them and gave up. Then maybe ten years ago I bought by mail order what was then (still would be, come to think of it) an expensive Internet radio from a reputable manufacturer. It didn't work properly, I told them immediately about the fault and they told me to post it back to them at my own expense, I argued that it was their reponsibiliy to pay the postage, which was a lot, and it took me about a week of refusing to be fobbed off by an argumentative customer service operative before I won that particular battle, and even then I had to accept one of their own vouchers for ten quid. Which I didn't use and has now expired.

Since then I've bought a replacement aerial for a radio, which did work, and a replacement internal fuse for a microwave, which also worked although they couldn't answer a specific question about whether it should be a time-delay or some other type of fuse.

Last year I bought replacement HP printer ink cartridges, which my new HP printer refused to recognise. Thinking the machine was at fault, I took it back to John Lewis, who told me one of the cartridges was defective and swapped both for me free of charge despite my having bought them from Maplins.

Having become careless, I went in a few weeks ago and bought a cheap CCTV camera for home security purposes. Despite having been sold as a colour camera, it only produces B&W images, which I imagined might be because I don't really understand how to connect it to my telly, and I wasn't that bothered anyway. However, after having sat outside my house in a sheltered position for four weeks, almost half the LEDs with which the camera's supposed to illuminate the surroundings at night have failed. After previous experiences, I'm not really surprised.

Has anyone else had experience of shoddy products bought from Maplins? After the recent camera incident I've decided not to be suckered into ever buying anything from this company again.

I can't claim to be a regular customer but might go in a couple of times a year for one thing or another. I have had no problems with items not working or giving up after a short time. I still have a working security cam from Maplins, placed in a tree at the front of the house, which I installed in about 2006. I also bought a weather station which is now 3+ years old and still going.

Must be me then. Maybe I'm a tat magnet. Or maybe it's a superpower and I'm really 'Putting the hoodoo on stuff from Maplins woman'.
Just curious about this run of unimpressive purchases from one company.

I don't use Maplins often as I find them to be a little pricey for the kind of things I want - having said that I've had no problems on the occasions that I have used them UNTIL recently. I bought an energy monitor plug so that I could see how much our hot tub was costing to run. The display was extremely dim to the point that I needed a torch to read it sometimes. I tried to use it a few days ago (it hasn't been used for around 2 months) and the display isn't working at all. If only I could find the receipt.

In honesty they had 2 different ones, one reduced to around a tenner, and the other at about £20. I'm thinking that the reduced ones were found to be crap so they were shifting them out in favour of a better one. Personally though I think that's bad business - they should have been removed from sale completely if that was the case.

I only buy certain batteries I can't get elsewhere (car key fobs etc) and they also do a great hard rubber electrical contact cleaner that's great for cleaning scalextric rails.... Other than that I find it an expensive store....

My forty-year-old Garryflex blocks are still going strong. http://www.axminster.co.uk/garryflex-abrasive-cleaning-block

I would miss Maplin, if it went, it's very handy for the odd component when trying to fix something. There's very few other shops left in Stafford that I frequent regularly. I find the staff to be just right, they'll tell you what they do know, or just leave you to it, at your choice..

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
Marlin are expensive because of the size of the stores they have.

I rarely go in or buy from there because the prices are too high.

I've only ever used the place for a few select electrical components that I needed. However, for the most part, everything seems to be way overpriced.

A quick look on Amazon or Flee-Bay for that matter, I can find exactly what I'm after for a fraction of the cost. More than likely to be better quality too.

However, the few times I have been in the Stafford branch, their customer service has been fairly OK, attentive not altogether that knowledgeable, lots of , "oooo errrrm hmmmmm *scratch chin, I'm not sure....can give it a go I guess?"

Generally, they are friendly enough and willing to help, so can't complain really

Maplin is expensive always has been but i cant fault any of the equipment i've brought from there

The CCTV systems I've installed 3 so far with out any problems at all but what i will say is the Power supply units could be a little better they just do the job and no more. Can i suggest you take a good look at the connections as I know from experience 8 out of 10 faults come from bad connections.
And was it a Swann system you brought or the cheaper version

www.swann.com you'll find troubleshooting hints and tips here

We have bought a couple of really good battery alarm clocks for a tenner each from there ,which have worked very well for a few years and still going.

Also bought a scientific alarm clock which, once we finally sussed out how to (sort of) make it work it has stayed plugged in for years and still going strong .Such a pain setting the alarm though, and has so many different settings that once the buttons are hit in the wrong order to turn it off it takes us days to find the time and alarm settings again . (That's just us not being brilliantly scientific enough to fathom it out!). But it tells the exact time and shines it onto the bedroom ceiling,so it stays plugged in just for that . Just have to be careful not to catch any buttons when dusting it.

So no problems with the few items we have bought ( Maybe the sales peson-a certain formurite- shouldn't have sold me the scientific clock knowing full well that his 'simple to set up' was a bit different to my version of 'Simple to set up' ....thanks G.Davis :D )

Last I heard he was living in Penkridge - he went to the bath shop next to TK-Max from Maplin, but I don't know if he's still there - I believe that @shoes may be in touch on FB...

He did a brilliant job of transferring all my old camcorder clips onto DVD for me before he left. Most embarrassing watching them when I got them home and knowing he had to sit for hours letting them play whilst doing it :embarrass:

I like to have a browse every now and again. It's just like when I used to go to Tandys as a young'un. Lots of wonderful tat that I don't really need.

But agree, rarely buy anything as it IS overpriced.
