Great photos @Gramaisc if only they were still there to get people outside and talking to each other and cooking of home grown produce instead of this hamster wheel we all choose to jump on!

Am I misreading this? The allotments are mainly still there, and those of us with allotments do get outside and talk to each other while producing and subsequently cooking our home grown produce :S

Jump off the hamster wheel and get an allotment and join in the benefits :)

They are not as many as there use to be, there is also a waiting list and the way new houses are going up, it's unlikely there will ever be more allotments created!

The waiting list thing has always struck me as a bit odd, particularly on Coton Fields - it doesn't look fully occupied.

There have, of course, been moves to build on there in the past....

when I was a kid the ones at the back of oxford gardens were thriving but mostly occupied by the house owners next to them, nowadays people come from all over the place and don't seem to tend to them regularly.

It's only last Summer that we had a leaflet offering local families a completely free allotment - which to me says they have spaces to fill! It was a SBC sponsored thing IIRC.

Please don't take this the wrong way but if you are genuinely interested have you actually researched getting an allotment? There certainly isn't a waiting list where I have my allotment, and I very much doubt there is on the Coton Fields allotments. If you are flexible you will get an allotment easily. Suspect you might be waiting a while on some sites, but defintely not every site in Stafford.

I am not aware of any reduction in allotment area since Astonfields and Coton Fields were reduced, which must be over forty years ago, I think.

Coton Fields has been publicly under threat a few few times, for 'development', and other areas also have 'development potential' - Aldi could look at Eccleshall Road and see more than a source of fresh veg, etc.....

Cotton Fields is Run by the Burgesses, so I very much do but it would be sold for development. They even have a website www.cotonfieldsallotments.co.uk

It's amazing what you find out during a trip to the hairdressers...

I know were you been for short back n sides lol

I can tell you now Cotton Fields Allotments are not for sale and never will be
You might see some activity in the coming months on the site BUT its nothing to do with housing or any other building project.
Severn Trent Water will be upgrading the works they have there to meet the demands of the new housing thats gone up round that area over the years nothing more

More than half of the original area of Coton Fields Allotments already has gone - I'm sure I remember some further plans being scuppered in the '80s, around the same time as the move to swap land on the Common...

That's true Mr G but the land is now registered so the Council wont get any more "free" land.
