Well, 8 of us went tonight. It was a combination of a retirement meal and an 18th birthday. I had the Nacho Burger.
SFC coated chicken breast topped with bacon, nacho cheese sauce and nachos. Very onomnomnom
Really lovely, and so much!
@ChrisLewis . This was my first time in The Bear. I have to say it was lovely and clean, food was soooooo nice, we had a pretty little blonde waitress serving us. She said she was only 16, turns 17 next week. Sorry didn't get her name. That girl deserves a gold star at the very least. Pleasant, not too chatty, but attentive. Worth her weight in gold.
I will be taking at least 1 of my brood in asap.

I know this isnt the right thead but hey ho...

@ChrisLewis

I had the bestest most gorgeous fish and chips on Monday night in the bar at the Moathouse. EVER

I like to ring the changes and try other places but I very frequently get very disappointed. (As per my lunch today in Salt).

Went along to The Bear yesterday as its my birthday - afraid I left somewhat disappointed though :(

I have an egg allergy - I pointed this out and it was noted, with the waitress saying that she was going to double check with the chef that everything was OK for me. A definite plus point, and done very well - however, it turned out that the burger bun contained egg, meaning I couldn't have it

I was a bit surprised I have to say - firstly because they never used to, as I've been to The Bear previously many times and never had a problem, and secondly because it is essentially just a bread roll - why on earth does it have eggs in it? It's something I have never come across before.

I was told that I could have the burger without the bread, which I accepted - I should say that I can't fault the service which was friendly and spot on, and the food I did have was great (especially the sweet potato fries) - but I was very disappointed that I couldn't have a complete burger. Obviously when you have an allergy you do accept that there are going to be things you can't eat, but to be told that you can't have a complete burger because the bread has eggs in it is a bit frustrating.

Doubt I'll be going back I'm afraid - I used to think the burgers in The Bear were the absolute best anywhere, but given that I now can't eat them...

That reminds me of the black pepper I have at home... label clearly states "Ingredients: 100% Whole Black Peppercorns" and it then goes on to state something like "Warning: May contain nuts, milk, wheat" or something along those lines....

So I guess its a bit harsh to be disappointed at The Bear Grill, they are just being cautious and going off what the packet states.... I guess the bread might be made in an area that may also have been used for producing egg products, as with the peppercorns example? Perhaps with some fore-warning next time, they can try and get you some special ones in?

You are right, that is a possibility - my understanding in this case is that it was a listed ingredient though, not a 'may contain' warning. Judging by the look of the burger bun my friend had, I'd say it's an egg wash applied to make it look shiny

I don't mean to be harsh, I'm just a bit frustrated :( If they are able to bring some egg-free ones in with some fore-warning they would certainly win some fairly major brownie points!

An authentic (and in many minds superior) American burger will use a savoury/light brioche bun, which will of course contain eggs.

Annoying for your allergy, but a bread roll is really no comparison.

Authentic? isnt the brioche bun on american burgers a recent innovation?

I hate brioche buns ...they are too sweet and in my mind dont seem to go with burgers.

Anyone else read the review in yesterday's Express & Star* (30.07.15)?

Sounds like someone pissed-off with The Bear Grill because of the rain and traffic problems, to me!

*Can't find it online, soz.

Pages 2 & 3 of the Weekender section in the middle - if you don't want to wade through it all....

He seems to like the cottage pies at Kidderminster Harriers.
