The Holly Bush Inn at Salt.

I got persuaded, against all my advice, to go to the Holly Bush today - Mother's Day, for God's sake - in fact, it wasn't too bad, although it was absolutely rammed and the staff coped very well with an influx of diners that was on the scale of a small refugee crisis.

Steak & ale pie - very nice.

Pie?

A pie has a pastry case

A thingy has a lid in a ceramic pot

Was it a pie?

Or a thingy?

It was a thingy - the lid was totally separate and, I suspect, only met the meat/dish assembly at the very last moment - nice enough, though.

I wasnt impressed at all with the place.

Let me know when they change the filthy carpet and get the decorators in and I might go back.

I am so glad you've said that, it really, really does need sorting, but no one else seems to mind but it makes me heave. I suppose whilst it full to the rafters they don't need to bother. This place should be a jewel not a gem.

If you don't travel much your scope for comparison is limited. I was of a similar thought about the place.

Went with friends on Saturday evening. Pan fried calf's liver starter was possibly one of the nicest things I've eaten this year. The mussels in my main course were very small and the liquor lacking in flavour 'crusty bread' accompaniment was sliced white & brown bread. My mate's braised ox cheek was pretty amazing. The rest rated as just ok.
Smashing pint of blonde beer though.

Went for the first time in a while today. Baked spud with chilli - not quite as nice, or as much, as it used to be. OK, though. Apple and rhubarb crumble, a bit overwhelmed by the cinnamon dusting, I thought.

Someone recommended this place to me last year and I walked in took one look at the filthy carpet and walked out. I then went to The Dog & Doublet which was very clean with nice food.
