The big face has gone from the Eccleshall Rd allotments!

....And, why do I hear loud fast running water when I walk past (what I think is the entrance to) the metal gated entrance to Alliance Street allotments ?

Well for the first time in history nice weather over a bank holiday and me being off work coincided so I have done so much work on our 'lottie' that I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy inside!!

Reroof shed - check
Stake and tie goosegogs - check
Plant early pots - check
Plant pea seeds - check
Prepare and manure bed for toms - check
Weed onions - check
Start digging another bit of neglected area to plant main pots in - check
Erect propogator thingy and plant sunflower, courgette, cucumber, toms, pumpkin and sweetcorn seeds - check

Final achievement was finding newts in our pond, made up all round really :)

I caught a man stealing my gooseberries tonight on my plot. He didn't realise I was at the top of my plot while he proceeded to shout his mouth off to his friends about how he 'liked him a little bit of gooseberry' as he helped himslef to a handful. Theiving piece of shite, I've already written my letter of complaint to the commitee about him. And to think he's another plot holder :( :(

Yes probably, best.
We do have a few youths that come and make a nuisance of them selves occasionally - prob not the same group every time. They look in the sheds for something to steal but non of our plot holders keep anything of any value in our shed - weedkiller does sometimes get taken, we usually fill an empty bottle of weedkiller up with water and keep it at the front for anyone that thinks its worth nicking.
We do also have some mindless vandalism but we just shrug it off and start again.never had any of the other plot holder cause a nuisance - the committee would instantly given them one days notice and change the lock code and put any on their belongings ready for collection Giving a three month period for their items to be collected by prior arrangement.
We don't hang about with me a chair person and the committee being made of suitable rottweilers
We are a nice friendly bunch really.

He's welcome to my gooseberries, they're vile! & last year they grew so big that you could of done some serious damage if you had thrown them at him!!!

We're fortunate to escape most mindless vandalism, at the moment anyway. This kind of makes it all the more galling that another plot holder was doing the stealing. I truly hope he gets his marching orders. I suspect he'll get a warning and I'll be very disappointed should that be the case.

Weedkiller would never be in my shed, I try and garden with nature. I don't mind the slugs having a bit as they feed the birds, I don't mind the birds having a bit as they are wonderful and important members of our wildlife and eat the slugs!! So no slug pellets, no wire over my veggies and fruit and definitely no weedkiller. I always get to harvest a good amount as well, easily the same as my neighbour who covers everything with netting and uses slug pellets. In nature everything finds balance. If you have weeds - why not dig em up rather than adding poison to the soil killing everything around and possibly eating the chemical residue in your produce? :o

i remember gosgog pie my mum used to make it needed a lot of sugar to be able to bear the taste

My goosegog crumble is legendary, just the right mixture of tart and sweet, and very little sugar used in the cooking either! WIn :)

Is there a long wait for plots @kyoto49 - husbands thinking about taking one on (I'm thinking the 2 near you are the nearest to us too) as we've got far too much veg for the room in the garden (or, I don't want him to dig up my lovely garden for what is probably a passing fad)...

Not when I last heard, and latest incident overlooked, I adore having my allotment. It's relaxing, get me fit, gets me out in the fresh air and I get loads of organic home grown fruit and veg from it. Met some good people as well. Message me if you're interested and I'll declare where mine is and who to contact!

Enjoying a drop of red.

My experience of allotment holding is that the vast majority of folk who do it are decent sort. I would have thought the committee would be only too keen to get shot of someone who is spoiling it for everyone else.

Hopefully. One of the old blokes helped me cover my goosegogs with his netting tonight in the hope that it makes things more difficult for the opportunists. Was kind of him I thought!

There is some considerable activity, of a non-allotment nature, going on next to the mini-roundabout on Prospect Road.

What has been an overgrown corner for many years seems to have been cleared.
