New New Library (Tipping Street)

It opens properly on Wednesday but it's looking great already - anyone had one of the tours happening over the last weekend?

There's some nice photos up on Twitter and videos up on the fb page

I know it's not been an easy ride but it really looks an improvement from the slightly all over the place-ness of the old library or the stately OTT ness of the old-old Library (as it now has to be know)

My mum went on Saturday; she said it was far better than the Shire Hall location, and she uses libraries regularly. As a 70 something technophobe she was extremely impressed with the 3D printer.

I'm fully able and I found the Shire Hall gallery an accessible nightmare.

I'm also excited by the 3d printer....

Yep, she did mention as it's all on one level it's far better; I imagine the Shire Hall was a browsing nightmare.

I went today, and I must admit I wasn't that impressed, mainly because of the number of books on display which seemed well down on the number on display in Shire Hall. There were some sections I don't remember seeing at all, so I'm wondering if I got to see everything. Was it just the one main room, with another behind it with some computers and the 3-D printers?

Maybe it was because it had just opened, but it did seem a bit crowded; normally I've got the shelves to myself. I guess it's teething troubles, but there was the spectacle of District Manager Andrew Baker shouting out "Where's the 300s?" I was stood at them at the time browsing a book by Nick Robinson, but though I did call out, he didn't hear me though he did eventually find the section a few minutes later.

It's ok - thought the same about the no. of books, but wonder whether the layout of the Shire Hall just made it appear there was much more.

Local history having one shelf rather than a room to itself is the most obvious 'downsize' - the microfilm machine has gone and all the microfilms are going to the Record Office.

It is spangly, which is nice if you like that sort of thing.

Out of interest do we knows what's happening to the Old New Library (Shire Hall)??
Talk is still that Wolverhampton University will be using it. Rumour is that they have chilly feet.

Neglect and decay the most probable outcome...

Haven't tried to infiltrate the building yet in case the council anti-terrorist squad arrest me, but it looks like one of those modern libraries for people who don't really have much interest in books.

On the subject of council white pachyderms, is the old job centre block at Greyfriars now disused?

A few months ago I had several hours to kill having dropped the car off at the garage, collecting it later that day. Rather than look around the shops (something that takes me about 45 minutes) I spent a very pleasant afternoon in the Shire Hall Library quietly reading a few chapters from several books, for example, John Keegan's "American Civil War". From my first impressions yesterday, I don't somehow think a similar afternoon in the new library would be quite as pleasant. It struck me as somewhere you wouldn't want to spend much time - a sort of "choose your books and go". Think McDonalds rather than Soup Kitchen.
