The County Hospital

Agree with the last couple of posts and I value an NHS free at the point of NEED. So yes, reduce waste and charge people for taking the p..s with appts, etc. But as suggested earlier, the more services offered, the more demand there will be and the bigger the NHS money-eating monster will grow. At some point, with a growing, aging population, the founding principle of the NHS becomes an impossibility. We've no doubt reached that point already. It can not be free to all whatever the cost any more.

Times have changed since 1948 - so has the population. Significantly higher taxes (which is what the NHS needs) will always be unpalatable to the electorate (regardless of their politics and regardless of people not realising how important the health service is until needed. At a general election people tend to want a tight ship more than anything else in my opinion). So rationalising the service and / or means-testing users and / or privatising parts of the NHS will become a necessity, won't it..?

As for the future of Stafford's hospital - the writing's been on the wall since the disgraceful scandal talked about all over the country. Changing the name of the hospital won't change anything. It's buggered and that is a disaster for this town.

People are stupid

People don't think ahead or plan for their future anymore

Politicians rely on this

So you get bleating individuals in distress in a state of desperation when their family can't get the healthcare they want having selectively forgotten they voted Conservative. Voted for cuts and low taxation so they can poison and gorge themselves and then expect an instant cure once presenting with illness but not understanding why it's not available

Ageing population in itself is not necessarily such a problem, what is a potential problem is the amount of time that people are infirm before they die. When a lot of of were young, doddery old folks were thin on the ground and those that were about were generally looked after by family.

In 44 years as an NHS member, I have never been to a GP for anything that needed a doctor, except for the fact that it is a closed shop and nobody else was allowed to do the simple tasks that were required - I feel sure that a lot of routine stuff that be handled further down the chain

Care and attention wasn't available when I went if anything they were dismissive and made me feel like I shouldn't have been there.

This won't improve anytime soon, we live in a society where the younger generation 'must have' and someone needs to get it for us!

I have heard that A&E at Stafford will currently no longer treat under-18s.

It may not be as simple as that, in fact - but, we'll see what transpires....

Don't all under 18's now have to use the Children's Unit (directly next to a&e, down the long tunnel) ? I know mini-me was sent there directly from in the queue to book into a&e when she broke her arm last year....they said at that time that children have to go straight to the Children's unit & not be seen in a&e.... if that all makes sense!

BBC article above - "Accident and emergency services for children have been suspended at Stafford County Hospital after senior clinicians said it was "not clinically safe"."

Oooh that's not good, but I thought they were only seen at the Children's Unit now anyhow, not A & E?

If you have a young-looking 18-year-old, it might be worth getting them a provisional driving licence, in case the bouncer says "No chance, mate.".

Is it common to split Paediatric and adult care into separate A+E departments ? It's almost as though it was done purely so it could then be shut down. :hmm:
