Sandon Village.

I'm sure we've all noticed the War Memorial in Sandon, just by the Dog and Doublet, but there is also another small memorial on the left as you leave the village towards Stone - here. I finally got around to looking more closely at it a few days ago.

There is a handy lay-by just a few yards past it.

I've been meaning to take a look at that for years but never got round to it...
The lay-by just past it is quite handy. Do take a look.

There is a similar one just past Bridgemere on the A51 - here - that records the crash of a Wellington, I believe.

I worked in Sandon Estate office for some years. They have a little book on sale on this subject there if you care to pop in.

Mmm I seem to think it may have been in School Lane.
It wasn't that far up, it was accessed from one of the roads off the dual carriageway.

It had a plaque in saying that it was built for Countess Somebody, for the use of the Scouts, around 1932, I think.

Some troops have camped there annually for over fifty years.

I noticed this odd little alcove today. I've been past it hundreds of times without ever seeing it before. There must be some history to it..?

It couldn't have been the site of a tap for public water supply could it. There used to be a number of taps around the streets of the village I used to live in, till the wter company took them away in the 1980s, that sat in little alcoves like that.

I couldn't find this book on Amazon so Googled it and found one on ebay for £2.50 + £1.20 postage. Am looking forward to reading it. Thanks@dirtboxin!

And there is this by local (Hilderstone) author, Harry Titley. Or Bill, as 'we' know him.

The events are largely in Newcastle under Lyme, though.

Now followed by A Staffordshire Man.
