Big Fire on Astonfields

The building is totally gone and is still burning now, flames four/five feet high in the centre of the rubble.

There is definitely concern over both gas and electrical supplies, both have large teams in the area.

Stafford Rangers are currently hosting a crowd bigger than they've had all season, I suspect - many facilities are being used by all concerned - even a marquee serving hot drinks and a car park full of brightly coloured vehicles.

If the wind had been the other way the houses in Aston Terrace would probably not be there now.

The Isabel Trail is currently half-heartedly closed, possibly just because nobody has remembered that the tape is there.

At 07:00 on thursday morning, there was still smoke coming off the site
and the stench was incredible. I, for one, would like to know which slack
gobbed feck wit gave planning permission for something capable of
producing so much devastation next to people's homes.

Update: it looks like the Environment Agency has sprung into action. Sandyford Brook on Astonfields road
has MANY bags in it which I am presuming are there to soak up any pullutants present.

Hubby went off to work earlier , so waiting to see if he's allowed in to his building. ( Apparently their phone lines were down part of yesterday as well, so might be relying on him actually switchng his mobile on for a change.)

Just rang him ....Schott and Astonfields gym car parks closed off as there are big hoses going across them and into the lake, and fireman said couldn't drive over them. So he and others have had to park further down the road by George Street Press. Says the car park is under about 8" of water .

That reminds me. Must go to Sainsburys

There is a lot of fallout all around the place - loads of bits this sort of size came down at the top end of Sandon Road during the explosive phase - around 400-500 metres away....

Pound coin for scale.

Perhaps just as well that it didn't happen in nicer weather...?

Bloody hell, wouldn't have liked to be hit by that :o Hubby said there's still loads of smoke around this morning. Says the fire hoses are holding the water back like a Dam, so suppose stopping the chemicals etc going into the lake? ( To correct my earlier post...It was the police who stopped him taking his car further, not the fire service)

I didn't see any actually still burning as they came down, and they don't seem to be stuck to the floor, so probably weren't even molten at that stage, either. They're quite light and wouldn't have actually caused an impact injury, I suspect - but, if the weather hadn't been so conveniently helpful, I wonder if there might not have been a lot of secondary fires..?

There's several hundred scattered around the place, at a guess.

Just been told that there's still lots of smoke coming from it and one hose pipe been continually blasting water (or whatever it is they are using) at it all morning, so presume that's to stop it igniting again. (He's got a birdseye view from his top floor office )

As you say, good job it was wet weather to help prevent secondary fires.

Looking at the images of the firefighter in the hydraulic platform ... rather him than me...
At least if u are on the ground there's an option to sidestep a flaming barrel

Rispekt

Was thinking that myself watching it on the news last night . Looked to be an impossible task to put all that lot out, the fire fighters have done a fantastic job at keeping it to just that area.

Just noticed my white window ledges are covered in black sooty bits , and that's all the way over in Wildwood.Only smelt the smoke when I went outside about midnight, so wind must have changed direction later in the evening.

I'd like to know too. I wonder who owns the 10,000 litres of oil that could have gone up?
