i would build a huge car park by the RAF camp then convert the old railway line ( clog and knocker as it was known ) and have a single line tram line with a foot path still for dog walkers along side, make a great park and ride scheme

My idea wouldn't solve much but would raise some cash... Put a camera on the roundabout of Mill bank/bridge Street to identify and fine drivers going down south walls....

Eastern bypass through Baswich, M6 junction on the Newport Road.
The Eastern bypass is on it way through Baswich, Beaconside extension to St Thomas Lane, and road improvements to Baswich Lane (?)
Has a deal been done around the back lanes? 42m fund? Only time will tell!

There was an April Fool a few years ago that declared that we would be having an overhead monorail system, and, by utilising existing lampposts for the main supports, and to provide the electrical supplies, there would be minimum disruption whilst it was being constructed.

There were many complaints from people who didn't want them sailing past their bedroom windows.

Turn a lot of the traffic lights off in town. Alter the timings for some of them i.e Tesco / Neport Road (spends too long letting cars put whilst backing up Newport Road and Lichfield Road.) And Lloyds bank crossroads (stays on green for riverway even when no cars are coming)

Cable cars might work.

Proper cycle paths on every main road in to Stafford, cycle paths that are protected from cars. Priority traffic lights for cyclists. Priority for pedestrian crossings over traffic. Proper enforcement of all traffic legislation. Camera's on traffic lights to catch red light dodgers, fines for stopping in a box, 100% enforced...........would be a start!! Oh, and make buses cheap, £1 for every journey or something!! And bus services in the evenings and weekends, proper bus serivces, not the one an hour attempt that just humours potential customers :D

Perhaps we could have an underground system?

We could just dig up all the main roads at the same time and install it in the 'cut and cover' method that was employed on a lot of the London Underground and New York Subway systems.

Nobody would even notice the extra roadworks.

Out of interest, if I film a traffic transgression will the police act on it? I can't remember the last time I rode my bike and didn't see someone on their phone whilst moving.

Numerous pedestrian lights need adjustment. The ones outside New Look turn to red even when pedestrians have already crossed, just after the lights outside Cafe Nero have turned green. So the traffic can't move up towards Sainsburys then. Also, the lights outside Sainsburys are on red for far too long, as are the ones outside Tesco Express on the A34 Stone Road. They stay on red for almost 20 seconds even though the crosser has crossed and already walking halfway down the road. And the phasing of the lights where they are building that old folks' home for pedestrians staying on red for cars for way too long, is an absolute disgrace.

unfortunatly our SBC leader commented at a recent meeting that 'no one is going to be spending thousands on cycle paths'

In fact, I would go as far as to say remove all the traffic lights from the 3 main roundabouts in Stafford!! They serve no purpose whatsoever. When they have broken down in the past, traffic has flowed much smoother!!

I would of thought that they would be set at a longer delay to allow the older pedestrians time to cross the road, I hardly think allowing older folk an extra 20 seconds to cross the road is a crime! (sheltered/assisted living houses right next to the MiniTesco... we will all be old some day!)

....but just think what fun it will be when Aldi open opposite miniTescos ....

Without investment in outer roads, EDR or a WDR etc Staffords traffic problems will only get worse. 500 houses on GE (Alstom) forced into town via Weston Rd / Lichfield Rd as they Have to enter the new estate vie Fairway/St Leonard's Ave.
Little investment in providing other means, paths/ Busses etc. Stafford can't even have a Bus Station.

I really don't understand all the lights on the New Look roundabout, by my count there's 12 sets in/around and all they seem to do is hamper the flow of traffic so that pedestrians can cross in a dozen places, and it's still a frustrating experience for pedestrians because of all the waiting at the next set of lights. They could probably restructure that roundabout to use half as many lights without adding that much extra walking for pedestrians.

I've seen old people skip across those lights whilst they are on green for traffic. Then they turn to red for 20 seconds whilst they are already waiting at the bus stop, laughing discretely, whilst noone crosses. What happened to the days of Pelican lights where you would press the button and instantly they would turn to red? The crosser crosses, the cars wait and then the cars move off. A win win situation. Folk in Stafford just have no respect for traffic lights - drivers or pedestrians, it is so frustrating!!

The bolded bit is the crux of the issue. Time and time and time again it has been shown that building extra roads does little to ease congestion yet short-sighted councils (like ours) continue to think that spending millions on roads is the only way. The only sustainable transport policy that will work is to get people out of their cars and off their fat asses and look at walking, cycling and public transport as genuine and viable alternatives to cars. This needs genuine involvement right from the top of transport planning and Stafford just doesn't have the will. We're a small town, and pretty flat, it would be easy to turn our town into a place not dominated by congestion, traffic noise and the pollution it generates.

** I know some people need vehicles because they: live rurally/deliver stuff/have heavy loads. Please don't feel the need to tell me every instance where a car is required. But, the vast majority of cars have 1 person in doing a short journey. Remove these to other forms of transport and the town is better for everyone.
