Just for fun: With Bates Gun shop now sold, what would the forum like to see on the Market Square?

Sorry quite like No7, & thought that had been decided, unless have read the paper wrong!
E&S says "....will trade as 7 Market Square - the name is already above the entrance".

Not much activity if it is opening in 2 weeks, but I guess until pipes etc. are in there isn't much to do? Still wondering where the bar will go.
All the activity is currently round the back (new toilets) in the former workshop area. New drains inspected and passed today!

The new guy is still to decide on who to use for pipework / cooling system install & flooring so I think he will miss his own deadline! The electrician in next week and the painter the week after but no sign of the bar or pipework!!!

The bar will be facing the entrance in the right hand side of the front room (against the back wall). The beer store will be beyond yhis in that vaulted inner room directly behind the bar (with the steel door - if you can remember the setup).

Did we/"they" decide on a name?

I forget where we were with that.

Bates is a winner for me, that or; Batey McBatesface
The external signage will stay exactly as it is and Bates Gunshop will remain. A bit of a clean is still needed (my Sunday job looks like bird shit cleaning!!!!) I do like the Batey McBatesface but....sorry no.... its not going to happen!

Yup, remember it well. The bar needed to back onto that store (I assumed the cellar would be extra storage, as can't be accessed from the bar) so figured it was there or in the back left room. Can't wait to see it finished :)

Shame it may well miss the cheese and ale festival but everyone I've talked to can't wait for another decent bar in town :D

It should be a fine addition to the Square. The new guy has got so much loaded to his advantage... freehouse...... location........ daytime cafe....... business rates exemption..... and is probably paying half the rent of everyone else. A real low risk opportunity for a local business!

Out of curiosity....
why exactly is he paying half the rent of everyone else?

And how does he (or anyone) get a business rate exemption?

From April next year, small business with rents (or rates as these are supposed to be a reflection of the rent being paid) below £15,000 can apply for small business rates relief. This discounts the business rates to zero and is a scheme specifically aimed to help small businesses.
In terms of the High Street and Market Square (town centre), rent and then the associated rates are a real killer and stifle small local startup businesses which are often asked to make a 5 year min commitment. Take the old cafe at 15 Greengate Street which has recently been let to Terrace! The advertised rent was c £35k p.a. thus paying an additional £17k in rates. That is £52k p.a. / £1k a week that businesses need to clear just to pay for the location. It is pure faceless greed by property owners that have probably never even visited the town.... They are all keen to keep rents high in order not to compete with each other thus keeping rents high and protecting there investments?? These guys are not interested in independents as they are on the lookout for large chains (Woolworths, BHS). This needs to change but unfortunately it will not. It is for this reason that properties are empty and startups are priced out.

It would appear that his landlord is a diamond geezer.
I was never interested in the big chains so kept the advertising local (front window). I believe that so long as the rental agreement works for both parties then it should be a win win situation.
I'm just so interested to see how a pub on the Square is recieved in Stafford. When I had to choose between offers for the property, this was a major deciding factor!

I like the name 7 Market Square, I think this new micro pub will be great.

With our summer now here, it's going to look wonderful in the evenings.

Here's my illustration of George Bate Gunmakers, which shows a tiny part of the garden.
Does anyone here know who owns the garden between 7 Market Sq. and Market Vaults?

I think I'll illustratate the building from another angle, much like the picture @Gramaisc posted, though it looks great wherever you stand!

The bit between is owned by the council, I am led to believe they aren't at all favourable towards letting people use it :(

I've been in town today and had a nosey past George Bate/No.7, and it looked like there was a frenzy of painting taking place.

I think they're going to make the cheese and ale festival and open on that weekend, as I think someone here mentioned.

I wish them well.
