Stoke pottery

I'm looking to buy a nice quality dinner set, plates, bowls, cups, that sort of thing. I'm looking for something made in Staffordshire that will hold value but still be suitable for everyday use. I'm sadly not familiar with the different pottery factories still in existance in Stoke and it's surrounds, so if anyone can advise where I could purchase something suitable I'd be very greatful. Thanks

It can be worth enquiring about the availability of replacement items, if it is going to be in regular use.

You can't go far wrong if you buy "Sarah's Garden" by Wedgwood but be aware that
it is pricey. There is quite a lot available on the internet but again, be aware of where
we live, folk may be selling seconds and colours can vary quite a bit.

Mrs T likes the Portmeirion factory shop. Seldom comes away without a bargain of some sort.

Good point Mr T. If nothing else, their undecorated (slightly misfired) pots
make for excellent plant holders / utensil pots.

Last time we were at Wedgwood the Factory Seconds shop had some nice sets in at reasonable prices.

Emma Bridgewater is slightly less old fashioned than Portmeirion & Wedgewood ....

Quite clunky and thick though - which is fab if you like that (and I love her mugs)

I was at Middleport the other day and the Burleigh stuff is lovely if you like florals

I suppose it depends on what kind of plates etc you want. I've never really thought of plates etc as needing to hold value - just be useful (dishwasher & microwave) and be pretty (enough)

We use a mix of stuff we brought from Index, some vintage midwinter pottery handed down and supplemented with an auction win (and auctions are an excellent place to look for sets) and we've some fancy wedding china that comes out for dinner parties.

Thanks all, I've learnt alot! I'm not a massive pattern person, but think we'll have a day out to a couple of factory shops in the near future :)

We went to both the Portmeirion Factory Shop and the World of Wedgwood today looking for a dinner set for "best"
Both had some lovely sets but we found more that we liked at Wedgwood
We were after something elegant, dishwasher safe and not too fussy and were really pleased to find (and buy) the Monique Lhuillier Waterford Etoile Platinum set, especially seeing as it was 50% off

Looks lovely! Do Wedgewood still make stuff in Stoke then? I was under the impression they shifted all production to the far east?

I don't know if all production is in the far east but our set was made in Indonesia

Thanks, so I wasn't imagining it! I try very hard to buy British where possible although I suspect the majority of people don't really care. I'm on a one person mission to try and keep the jobs over here. Was disgusted when Wedgwood moved production overseas tbh, and Dyson, and Hornby and Dr Marten :(
