Christmas adverts

Its that time of the year when we are agog to see whether the john Lewis advert will top the previous year.

Ahh...the lonely penguin really pulled on my heartstrings this year.

however the other day I caught my other half with tears in his eyes, and fearing the worst i asked what was the matter.

"watch this" he said and directed me to the Sainsburys advert.

Oh, have you seen it?

It is so emotional and was commisioned not only by Sainsburys but the Royal British Legion.

How sad then that 139 people have complained to advertising standards that the Great War shouldn't be used to promote a supermarket.

I disagree. Anything that shows what our soldiers went through is a good thing and this advert is pure genuis.

Thoughts?

For those who haven't...

It's a work of art, i don't really care about any of the other things surrounding it - i feel it more as an homage than an advert, regardless of the logo at the end.

It's a wonderful and touching work of art is what it is.

I love this very clever sends a very clear message of peace and forgiveness being at the heart of Christmas and very subtly done on the commercial front!

I cant believe the complaints they've received, some people seem to have far too much time and too little to occupy them

I personally think the ad is amazing, Lest we forget - and how can we, with such an amazing tribute to those who have lost their lives at this years remembrance service, why should we not spare a though at Christmas for those that fought for our freedom.

They are selling the chocolate bar (The only product shown in the advert) with 100% of the profits being donated to the Royal British Legion plus a donation from Sainsburys. http://www.itv.com/news/update/2014...5-000-british-legion-chocolate-bars-per-hour/

They are hoping to (and almost definitely will) raise millions for the charity that Sainsbury's have been in partnership with for 20 years. http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/corporate-partnerships/our-partners/sainsburys

Yes the ad may not be 100% factual but show me an advert that is.

I'm loving the Monty ad, although I don't think John Lewis have come close to the snowmen of 2012, that was spectacular!

I still haven't seen the Coca-Cola truck this year, which isn't surprising as I fast forward through most of the adverts, though once that one comes on the telly box it really feels like Christmas.

I had tears in my eyes watching the Sainsburys advert as well. Don't normally sit and watch the adverts, but this one got my attention.

Can't believe people complained about it! Seem to be complaining about everything these days.

I may be a man, but still proud to say it just put a right good lump in my throat watching that. I think that Sainsbury's should be praised and not slated for bringing such an advert, especially when it has been done with almost no commerciality whatsoever.

139 complaints thankfully isn't many at all from the millions that will have already seen it. It's a very small minded minority.

Absolutely fantastic advert!!

I saw the John Lewis ad first and love it, although I don't think it's quite up there with the Bear and the Hare from last year.
The Sainsburys ad though tops all the Christmas ads for me, very artfully done, pulls at the heart strings and well done to Sainsburys for not cashing in and commercialising it.
M&S fairies ad is rubbish though.

seen it with the link above. excellent idea and advert. I will get a bar of that chocolate when I get in sainsburys, just to buy that alone as I don't shop there.

but, and this is not a dig at any advert in content, ... its only the middle of November, the john lewis one was a week ago. once December is here then ok, fair game, get all the Christmassy stuff on tv, but now is too early for me. bah humbug

For once, I think the obstructive cap might be a good idea here - I could be tempted to microwave a mug of this on a cold evening.

Waitrose do seem to be redefining "essential" - Sainsbury's and Tesco also have similar products.

I'm glad that I now know that this exists, or I could have been misled into thinking that people had been puking up after a heavy night on the mulled wine.

I love the ad with the robin and the mince pie - what an adventure for such a little bird.
