I'm with TalkTalk and am averaging 3.5mb and 1.4mb and the damn things crashes 2 or 3 times every evening.

Would upgrading to TalkTalk fibre help?

The only thing that would help is leaving talk talk. Voted the worse Internet provider every year with good reason.

Yes, assuming you live near a box as speed is determined by distance from the street box you connect to. My OH had similar but only 0.9mb upload, moved to virgin instead now.

They were very good to my OH during the atlas business services debacle, really couldn't fault their service.

If I was to leave which fibre provider would you recommend without paying the earth.

I don't want any sort of box, extra channels or anything fancy I just want to be able to connect to the internet 24 hours a day!

BT and Virgin own the infrastructure is my understanding....if that helps at all? After speaking with all the techies at work I went with Virgin. 50mb fibre for 16 quid a month. I do have TV with them. Pretty sure your road has cable as your just round the corner from me so fibre won't be an issue!

Pretty much everyones fibre will be the same speed, you are just choosing between BT fibre and virgin cable like kyoto says. For most cable is more reliable, but not all. I use fibre as I upload a lot, virgin upload speeds are very poor but most people don't need them anyway.

On fibre I get 76 down and 19 up, but only pay £24/m with phone line. At the time Virgin wanted double that for your package, and most of my downloads happen overnight so I didn't need 200 down. That said I'd happily move back to Virgin if they could do maybe 100/25 for a sensible price as I found them very reliable.

100 down, 6 up for me on Virgin which handles all we can throw at it including a phone and tablet for all of us, 2 TiVo boxes, 2 consoles, 3 computers and 2 AppleTVs.

The TIVO boxes have their own 10mb Internet connection, entirely separate to your main line. Didn't know that before.

When our TiVo boxes were installed they weren't even connected to the internet.

I've had to buy Powerline adapters to plug them into the broadband.

Actually let me rephrase that.

Neither box could be controlled via the Virgin Media TV Anywhere app so I had to buy the Powerline adaptors to be able to do that.

I'm not sure if that means they were or weren't connected to the internet.

Ah! Yeah, I did wonder about the ethernet port on the back. The TV is streamed over the internet, the tivo has its own internal modem for that, but it is not part of your home network. I guess thats where the ethernet comes in.

My Superhub is located in the dining room as that was where I originally had dial-up internet installed - the iMac was on a desk in there - so when I had broadband installed it was the logical place to put it.

TiVo boxes are located in the front room and my son's bedroom so can't be physically attached to the Superhub without having Ethernet cables trailing everywhere so Powerline adaptors where the obvious solution.

As long as your wiring is in half decent shape they work great. Mine is not!

They work just fine thankfully. I've also had to use one for my PS4 and get about 45Mb download. For some reason the PS4 wifi was giving me about 1Mb down when originally it was about 25Mb.

The problem I had with powerline adaptors was that they ran very hot, probably says something about the state of my wiring.

My new fibre connection and TIVO box have arrived. Doesn't look like rocket science on first expection, but that TIVO box is one ugly mofo isn't it :( Might have to hide it in the cupboard!!

Tivo for some people sucks, some boxes didnt like the last patch and if i want to watch a recording i will have to sit and look at a black screen for 30 seconds or even longer, for me Virgin for internet Sky for TV.
