Railway crossing by the Spittal Brook

I have a slight interest in all things trains and was wondering.

Where the bridge crosses over the train line by the Spittal Brook, was there originally a level crossing going past the pub? I'm guessing electrification would of caused the change?

The bridge was there before the war - though, it is possible that it was raised for the electrification.

I've wondered that as well as the row of terraced houses marries up with the pub on the other side of the tracks. I also wonder if there were houses knocked down to build the bridge?

How do I edit this?
Until fairly recently you could see the remains of a level crossing on the ground.

I'm sure the bridge was 1890s, although I can't find a link for that now. I think you used to be able to see before & after maps on the wall of The Sun pre-refurb.

There may not have been any houses on the other side of the road because BRC (and whatever was there before) used to be there.

The Trainline did at one time have branches going into both the BRC and English Electruc (now Alsthom) factories. There was a signal box near the bridge.

It was a very different town then! Great thread, I've often wondered when the bridge was built and the road separated into two, probably had quite an impact on the residents.

Great thread. This is what the forum is all about.
Cheers, as someone who grew up in urban West Yorkshire there were always disused railway lines etc going in all directions and i've always kept an interest in such things....i find it fascinating...

Another native Wezzie! Careful, we abe in danger of taking over! Think Yorkshire suffered from a lot of cuts to the railways, hence loads of disused lines.

It's always something I meant to ask on here but somehow never got round to. I find any new bits of info about the area in which I live fascinating.

The embankment and bridge were built long before BRC relocated from Manchester.

I believe that they built on a genuine greenfield site.
