I strongly suspect the ducks haven't even bothered to read the signs that say bread is bad for them. They've swum past me and the boy throwing them bird seed more than once to go and eat Mighty White being flung into the water Frisbee-style by someone else.

I think Stafford is a nothing place, it's no defining character, it's best aspect is the transport out fo the place, not around it though, the council have messed that up, the shops are generic, the social side is pants, the social care for the elderley and needy is disgusting, the education is average, at best, and the sporting provision is way below what other towns have. The council is intent on removing all traces of greenery wherever possible and it's in the dark ages when it comes to sustainable transport. What's most frustrating is that people seem content with this. If that makes me like HopesDad then I'll take it!! Soon as I finish working I'll be finding a more forward thinking place to live!! I aspire to live out my days somewhere where being not as bad as Rugeley or Cannock or Medway towns isn't seen as the best feature of the place!!

I'll answer this in two parts. The first part about you finding it frustrating that people are content with Stafford......
Some people are capable of seeing the good in things.
We realise that there are other places out there where they have things that we don't have, it's doesn't necessarily mean that you will be happier in those places.
We have nothing in Bednall, apart from a school. We don't have a pub, we don't have a bus service, we don't even have a shop.
Stafford has all of those things but what makes a place worth living in is a positive attitude, making friends, seeing what's out there and enjoying what there is to offer instead of moaning about the grass being greener on the other side.
The second point about you moving to another place when you have finished work.......
Why wait? Why not move and commute?
Or find a job somewhere else?
I really really really don't understand why someone would willingly live in a place that they despise.
If it's so important to you to live somewhere else then stop moaning, change your life.
But that requires effort, planning, and a change of attitude whereas sitting at a computer complaining is easy.

But is that not the reason Why you live in Bednall?
There used to be a shop & post office (even if the post office was in someone's living room). The Bus service is on the Cannock road, alway was, and there is a pub in Brocton?

Sorry, I don't understand the point of your post.
I'm not complaining about living in Bednall, I love living here because of the friends that we've made and the wonderful community spirit.
There is quite a lot going on which we organise ourselves.
There is a pub in Brocton yes, and also a wonderful hostelry in Acton Trussell but they are not in Bednall.
Arthur still owns the shop but he lost heart when Maisie died, he doesn't really sell anything, he's in his 80's now and is struggling.
There used to be a daily bus in Bednall but we lost that last year. Yes there is a bus service on the Cannock Road, nearly a mile away, not much help to those that struggle with walking, the elderly or those carrying shopping back.
My post was to highlight that while we don't have the facilities that other communities or towns have, we look to the positive and muck in together to make things work for us all.
As do other small villages.

Then I apologise, as I miss read your comment.
I though this was why you live in the village, and not for facilities like a shop or a pub.
I don't think there ever was a pub in the village?

I love a good Safari Supper - my inlaws lived in a similar small village down south and they can be fantastic places if you both put the effort in and have people around you to put the effort in worth it.
They've sinced moved back up North to somewhere more populated and developed - and they moved with their advancing years in mind. They loved their time in the small village but are apprechiating and enjoying the slightly bigger scope of where they live now
@Goldilox grew up in that same small village and didn't want to recreate that, and I don't drive so we specifically looked for a house close to the town / train station and it's a combo that's worked very well when Master Wearn came along.
What we've found since moving to Stafford, and specifically our street is a wealth of friends, things to do, easy access to events and yes if we need a day trip easy access to road and train.
What works for us wouldn't work for someone else and so on, but I don't understand the nay saying about the park / town events - it's a friendly and small enough town with enough facilities that you can easily start something up (as I have done with cake clubs) or taken part in events like friends of Victoria park events, things at the windmill, things on Meetup and events my friends have been part of (charity nights etc).
Stafford isn't going to change over night, nor should it - but if it doesn't suit you then do something about it or move to sonewhere that does. (My parents did this by upping sticks from South Wales and moving to Barcelona).
Life is too short to not enjoy where you live.

I walked past the Park at a little after 6pm today. There were three active skateboarders and about five or six sitting chatting/smoking. There were two 5 or 6-year-olds in the sand and that was it.
Returning about 30 minutes later, the actual children had bee replaced by two teenaged girls, larking about on the wobbly bridge thing.
Perhaps a little after peak time, but it was a nice evening.

Ok, right, then. The point that I was originally trying to make ( but obviously not very successfully as it happens) was in reply to @kyoto49 who was moaning about Stafford and it's lack of facilities and how dreadful it was.
I was trying to say that Stafford, with all it has to offer in the way of park, theatre, shops, restaurants, etc is so much more than other places have and being happy somewhere is about making friends, making connections and finding positive things about where you live.
I only mentioned our village as a comparison to Stafford, to point out to Kyoto that Stafford has so much going on compared to rural life, yet she lives there (Stafford) but clearly isn't happy.
No, we like living in a village, but in an ideal world we'd like to live in a larger village.
Lots of villages have a shop, a pub, a community centre and other things.
It's the people in the village and the friends that we have, the social life that keep us here, not the village itself.
