Saturday night out

Last night, having a rare babysitter hubby and I decided to venture into Stafford for the first time in almost 12 months. I was looking forward to it thinking there were a few new places to try but came home extremely disappointed.

Now don’t get me wrong, I like Stafford, I have many fond memories of evenings out in town but I have no idea what’s happening currently.

It’s not a Stafford bashing post, at least that’s not what I’m aiming for, just an honest account of what happened last night.

First drink in the new bar area at Pastiche, lovely setting and they’re trying really hard with the gin menu and drinks offering, perfect start to the evening. Second on the list was Chambers/living Room/Hogs Head. Clearly I haven’t been following the posts very well and found ourselves disappointed with a wasted walk (in heels) to the now cleared out and definitely shut venue.

Then we headed down to the new development, a quick stop of at Revoloution and quick it was, I wish them no ill but it’s not somewhere I’m in a hurry to head back to, it’s just not my cup of tea.

Things started to pick up as we wondered past My Belle, two staff working and not another soul in the place, we called in and were very impressed, the staff were friendly and welcoming and knowledgeable about the drinks, a couple of fab cocktails and a yummy pudding later, it’s definitely somewhere we will be returning to.

Bu why was it empty? Why does it seem so difficult for Stafford folks to venture of the main strip by a couple of hundred feet? The place is nicely decorated, the produce seemed to me to be good value and of a good quality but our £30 of so isn’t going to keep the doors open on an evening when it should be full to capacity. It’s a shame, somebody is really trying there but unfortunately for whatever reason it just doesn’t seem to be succeeding.

Next was The Post House/Apocothary, it had a similar feeling to revolution and we didn’t stay, it seems to have become a little rough round the edges and somehow the concept feels dated and a bit cheap.

Then the Swan, hubby was very happy to see Guinness back on the menu, no real issue here other than whoever booked the band last night band need to be sacked on the spot, it was cringe worthy, like granddads karaoke, by the empty beer garden it seems most people had the same opinion.

Finally we enjoyed a final drink at Joxers/Market Vaults, music was fab, service was good and once you get over the initial sweaty body smell as you walk in the door – it’s all good.

We headed home with the feeling we’d probably have preferred to stay in with a nice bottle of wine. It may be old age creeping in but based on last night it’ll probably be another 12 months before we venture out to Stafford again.

We don't go out at night anymore, start around 4 and visit number 7, the floodgate, market vaults and Shrewsbury arms. Not all each time, and in no particular order, but we're gone by 9 when town starts filling with the casa crowd.

We usually go for drinks at the Sun or Floodgate first followed by grub at either the Swan or Bear. We're gone from Stafford by 9 as well on a Friday or Saturday for the same reason.

Last night we had a double works do at The Fox preceeded by a visit of the hostelries in Newport centre. Brilliant night!

I think Stafford caters really well for both the "Casa crowd" and everyone else. I love Revs because it's cheesy without being too ropey like wetherspoons/casa. No 7 is a wonderful cosy grown up place and it's a shame you didn't call in there. MArket Vaults is like a comfy pair of Converse. We are spoiled for choice I feel. With two kids we don't get out so much any more but I've yet to have a shit night out in Stafford in almost a decade of living here.

I don't think it's just Stafford. We went to Ludlow a few Saturday's ago (fantastic little town well worth going to) and whilst it was busy in the day, it was totally dead on the night.
Maybe peoples habits have changed. It was reported how how many under 30's don't drink and the ones who do tend not to go out until late. Many places up town wouldn't be open without the older crowd. Also the price difference between supermarkets and pubs is huge. I called in at the Sun the other Saturday and fancying a change I had a pint of Thatcher's cider costing £3.95, I can get 4 cans for that.
Saying that I like Stafford. It has some decent pubs and a friendly crowd (that said, that's going on Early Doors drinking as I'm normally home by 10!)

I think Stafford does well in terms of places to go out. It has just about everything you'd want from a night out in a small town.

I'm a fan of Revs, it's much better than other bars in the chain, its frequently busy on a Friday and Saturday night and I haven't seen any trouble there in an evening (I did see some very drinks football 'fans' have a brawl outside one afternoon last summer but that seems to be the exception). The music is good if you like a mix of current/cheesy/pop type stuff. I'm not a regular of the big night out type scene but i can't stand Casa, and can very occasionally be seen in Couture which is dreadful but somehow works.

Both the Spoons pubs are decent. You know what you're getting with a Spoons and it's a safe bet for an ale and something cheap to eat. I like their model and it's still the place I'll meet my mates for a night out.

The Floodgate is great, the gun shop (As Number 7 should be called) is better. Great selection of gin which is really on trend, many, many different beers and an all round fantastic little addition to the town.

The Swan is always a nice night. Live music in the summer is good, the crowd is always on the classier side although some of the drinks can be pricey.

The Market Vaults isn't somewhere I've been on Friday/Saturday night but I like it. I was in there on Thursday and it was very busy. Good live music, good beer and nice crowd.

My Belle is on the list to visit. I'm sure things will pick up there when Verso opens, although I'm not sure the very dark tint on the windows helps. They seem to get a bit of trade during the day so I hope they do well.

The last couple of nights I've been out, town has been busy, although usually not until after 10.

I don't think My Belles has marketed itself as an evening joint either really,

It's a shame - it should do more - I suspect when Verso Lounge opens up it will help.

I don't think Stafford is any different from anywhere else on a weekend evening - and there's plenty of mix depending on what you fancy - I've had good nights and bad nights in equal mix.

My one experience of Post House is second hand, and during the day. But I suspect it echoes your experience. Friend and their family went in there about lunch time, stood around a while until someone came up to them beer in hand a bit confused as I guess they're not used to lunch goers (but yet, were open for it?). So they sat them down, and just to juxtapose the beer in hand staff member my friend was asked to remove their hat (a beanie)?

Seemed a bit trying to be posh but not doing terribly well at it I suspect.

Not sure they actually stayed for lunch or went somewhere else in the end.

I'm happy to leave weekend night outs to the young and the underdressed - but I can rock a midweek, borderline will I have a hangover and need a subway MegaMelt for breakfast once I get to Stoke any given week.

Current fave is the Crafty Sow on a Wednesday - catch Happy hour with the half price drinks and enjoy 30 delicious chicken wings to 'share' for £7.50 - they had a very lovely mango cider on last time was there.

The Floodgate, The Rose and Crown, The Sun and The Market Vaults are also fine mid week drinking spots - as I imagine Revs is - especially with 241 cocktails on a rev card.

Myself and the good lady were also in town last night at we went to the Gatehouse to watch Reginald D Hunter... We had a drink at No.7 which was great (Mrs B tried a grapefruit gin which was lovely).
On the way home we stopped in the Shrewsbury Arms and I have to say I was disappointed... Just after 10pm and there were some real rowdy sorts shooting and screaming.... We won't be returning there in a hurry....

.

I personally think that My Belle doesn't know what "it is" and as such hasn't got its marketing strategy quite right.

I thought that it was a dessert place (like the other one opening..."little dessert" I think)

So, I genuinely wouldn't go into a place that only served sweet stuff. Not for me.

So out of curiosity I did look at the My Belle website.

I didn't realise that they did sandwiches and cocktails.

But they only open after 6 on two nights of the week.

So I probably wouldn't wander off the main drag to go there in the evening until they offer more than a sandwich.

And perhaps others aren't going because they have no idea that in the evening they can get cocktails.
