You've just reminded me somehow of the episode of BOTTOM where Eddie mugs himself and "makes a fiver" :D

Few bargains will ever surpass the time that I had that "disc failure" that the journey to your house was sufficient to repair - and I found a hundred quid under it when I picked it up to put it in the car - could have been there for years...

..the £100 would still be there now, unknown, if it hadn't played up that day..

I quite like the "laboratory-style" glassware that you sometimes see about. A few days ago, I saw a teapot in the Hospice warehouse that I thought was this sort of thing.

Tea-for-two300.jpg

The removable glass insert has thin slits in the bottom, to allow the tea to brew and then the leaves can be removed by taking the insert out, to avoid the tea stewing.

On closer examination, though, there were no slits to be seen, so I investigated further and found that the insert was fused to the outer and not removable. I had a hunch about what it might be and bought it.

Further examination at home revealed a tiny hole in the base that had been sealed with molten glass - this reinforced my suspicion that the space between the inner and out glass walls had been evacuated for insulation purposes. A test today has proved this to be the case.

A small victory.

Just found some lamb guard of honour in the Iceland reduced section, £16 down to £3! Afraid I had the only 3 left, thats Easter sorted!
Also shouty meat man in the market square had 3kg of gammon for a fiver on Wednesday. No idea if its a regular deal but after smoking one and pressure cooking another I can confirm they're pretty good :D

An electric 'oil' lamp from the Hospice shop at the Tip. It needed rewiring, as somebody had cut the wire off - too short to even insert a switch as a joining piece. It was a bit of a struggle to rewire it, but all is done now and the metal parts are all suitably earthed. Opening it up proved that, although it is made from genuine oil lamp parts, it's not a conversion, but a factory produced item, possibly at a time when they were still making oil lamps which had identical exteriors.

An LED bulb in and it is functional. The current lead is a bit short, but I'll insert a switch where the plug is now at some point and then add a longer lead to the plug. The new lead has a much thicker outer sheath, as it passes through two holes in the thin brass sheet that the lamp is made from.. I did open the holes up a bit, but there just isn't enough room to fit grommets.

Another one, less 'authentic', but OK and requiring rather less work - just a new plug and a check that it was wired up right - I do like metal things to be earthed.

There's the guts of a Wilko's torpedo switch in front of it - for the first one, at some point - I wasn't sure from the packaging if it was three-way or not, but it is and rather well made, too, should you require one at any point in the future.

Mrs T found this garden furniture for £50.
Second hand but unused, still in its packaging.

The umbrella's a posh un, quite heavy material and a winder to raise and lower the canopy.
Reduced from £55 to £10 at a garden centre out Leek way.

I saw this in the Hospice shop the other day.

$_86.JPG

CD player, amp and FM/DAB radio, with auxiliary and phono inputs, it seemed a good set up, so ! bought it.

I set it up to see if everything worked - and it does, including both remotes. Excellent, I thought.

The last thing that I tried was the CD player. It indicated that it would play, if I pressed Play, so I did, and it played. I find that people often leave CDs inside players, so I opened it to replace it with one of mine and found the drawer to be empty.

When I closed the drawer, still without a CD in, it was still able to play. Mystery..... :mystery:

Some investigation revealed that it actually contains a hard-drive, which will record from any played CDs, should you so wish. Even further investigation revealed that the hard disc is currently only 2/3 full, yet it contains (a reasonable estimate of) over two weeks continuous music....

Popped into the Craft Cave on Weston Road yesterday - so so sad to see it go - I've been a regular customer since I was a child.

The lovely lady has reams and reams of beautiful ribbon for pence a meter - plus lots of other goodies!

So if you know anyone crafty (or just have ribbon appreciation) pop in and grab a bargain!
