Romanians in Stafford

I've heard, anecdotally, that the recent wave of immigrants from Romania are centred around Friar's Terrace and the surrounding area.

I'm curious to know more about this new community, for example, in which sectors are they generally employed? Is it generally around the town centre where the community lives?

How many Romanians would you estimate have now settled in Stafford? These figures are impossible to ascertain from any government source - particularly as the majority of migration has occurred within a very recent timescale.

I look after a rented house that belongs to a friend. The current tenants are Romanian and, apart from their dog, who hates me for some reason, they are as good as you could ever hope for. The house is near the Rec at the back of the hospital. They previously lived on Sandon Road. The other Romanians that I know live in the old RAF houses and near the Stone Road Tesco. One other that I know lives in Wildwood, I believe, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

One of them is a plasterer and has been here over a decade. The more recent ones have worked at Billington, the MOD on Beaconside, Sandmaster at Hixon and various care services, although they have qualification and abilities that should be utilised in 'better' jobs..

One of the more recent arrivals would have made a truly marvellous spy in the old days - when I first met her, having been here less than a year, I genuinely thought she might be from the Chester area - no hint of 'foreign' at all. The only word that I've ever had to explain to her is "rounders", which just made no sense...

If you do ever deal directly with them, beware of the coffee, it can be a little strong for UK tastes....

What an odd post....

By the way my dentist is Romanian, but I'm guessing you didn't want to hear that....

Thank you for some of the constructive responses. I am baffled why a straightforward question would be met with such distaste? Would it be considered the same if we asked where in Stafford the Irish community settled back in the earlier part of the century and their respective areas of employment? Would it be considered inappropriate for a Bulgarian farmer to pose the question where the recent English immigrants in his village were working (if at all?) If I'd said where are all these new Geordies in town working and living would I be accused of some obscure satanic ritual? Is this John Marwood a troll? Why would you let him post on this forum with this kind of offensive behaviour? Do you not have proper Admin here?

The answer to all that bollocks is...

Yes.

The presumption that this thread was started with racist or xenophobic undertones is depressing.

We live in a society of "the offended" and God knows why people need to pour scorn on somebody "just asking a question". As long as people integrate and live by the laws of the land, that's fine. In situations like this, I wonder how many people have experienced living with, or next door to, a house full of people of a different nationality or culture? Maybe the original poster had a genuine reason for their question or was just generally, and innocently, inquisitive!
When I meet people of any nationality, part of my conversation includes where are you from and what do you do?
That seems to be a crime to some in the "society of the offended"..................but people can talk right the way through some threads by judging people on what car they drive or what part of town they live in? Very odd behaviour!

I have not, since the 1950s, lived nextdoor to people of my nationality or culture.
I suppose I haven't either, given that I'm Welsh and since I left the land of my fathers', have never (knowingly) lived next door to a Welshman.

So to continue the trend of this thread which area of Stafford is the Welsh quarter and where do they all work?
