Romanians in Stafford

So to continue the trend of this thread which area of Stafford is the Welsh quarter and where do they all work?
I don't know, but watch out for huge gangs of tough, sinewy men roaming the streets, terrifying people with their close-harmony singing.

The only Romanians I have met live and work at Billingtons Fruit Farm, you can see the workers waiting for the bus outside of the train station on a Saturday.

Really?

I do have to say that it is a shame that a simple question was turned into an accusation of racism within minutes. Unless and until we get over the "say a word and you are racist" mentality as a way of shutting down discussion, we will never be able to have a sensible discussion.

For the record, I don't care how old you are, what colour, creed or religion you are, what disability you think you have or actually have, who you slept with last night and who you decide to shag tonight - I really don't care - If you are willing to have an open discussion and contribute, then you are fine by me. That discussion may well include cultural differences and questions around the same and anything I say that offends you will be said out of ignorance, not a willingness to offend and I am more than happy to be educated on whatever stance you have to make me less ignorant and I expect you to have the same mind set about my beliefs and opinions.

Pull out a race/sex/religion/sexual preference/disability card in an attempt to stop me asking valid question to educate and inform us all will mean I will simply stop engaging as you cannot argue with a bigot or someone with their own minority agenda- and that sort of person is everywhere and is usually as boring as hell

I have to admit, I am somewhat surprised at the assumptions in this thread also.

Is this John Marwood a troll?

Yes, but a better calibre of troll than your usual run of the mill antagonist. ;)

Why would you let him post on this forum with this kind of offensive behaviour?

Anyone is free to post here, as long as they are not breaking any laws or seriously infringing forum etiquette. :)

Do you not have proper Admin here?

That is open for debate.

...especially as Sandy hadn't posted for 5-and-a-half years.

No-one is under any obligation to post. There are members who read us every day and have done for years, but never post a thing!

The Street View is out-of-date, but this shop, on Browning Street, is a handy place to track down random Romanians, should you ever need one.

It's a sort of mini-supermarket now, I think.

A lot of the Romanians who are to be seen around Tesco are migrant horticultural workers, they follow the harvest around Europe picking fruit & vegetables then at the end of the season they head back to Romania for the winter. They are brought into Tesco so that they can do their shopping.

One other thing which may have quite an effect on Romanians working here is the devaluation of the pound against the leu - eighteen months ago, you could get 1 leu for 16p, it will cost you 20p now - that's quite a drop in the value of what you might be sending or taking back home.

I've heard, anecdotally, that the recent wave of immigrants from Romania are centred around Friar's Terrace and the surrounding area.

I'm curious to know more about this new community, for example, in which sectors are they generally employed? Is it generally around the town centre where the community lives?

How many Romanians would you estimate have now settled in Stafford? These figures are impossible to ascertain from any government source - particularly as the majority of migration has occurred within a very recent timescale.

Indeed, it would appear we won't need to close our borders as it'll no longer be economically worthwhile to come in the first place!

I'm old enough to remember a famous cigar-smoker once saying "This will not affect the pound in your pocket.".
