Didn't realise til just now sitting in the Bird that they've put the prices up and added the large plates to the menu.
Still reasonable value and better quality than comparative establishments.

The reputation of the bird in hand being a great pub has reached south shields. South shields fc are playing Stafford Rangers on Saturday. Their fans have booked into the bird in hand for pre match beers and food.
The South shields are very friendly lot and will be bringing 400 fans to stafford.

Sitting in the Bird enjoying the sloe gin cider and the old story telling mob have turned up. I'm not knocking non drinkers at all but this crowd seem adamant not to spend any money but still use the free facilities of the back room.
One even ordered a pint of free soda then added at the last moment lime cordial and moaned when she was charged for the cordial!!!
It's good to see people socialising but not when they're taking the pee!!!!
