Days out.

Couldn't find another thread on this so thought it might be a good idea to have one recommending decent days out that are not too far away. Its surprising whats on the doorstep.
We went to "Castleton" in the Peak district on Sunday. First time there and I thought it was a great little village. Almost a sea side town vibe. Loads of good pubs and eateries, trinket and fudge shops! Dog friendly. And obviously the walks, scenery, castle, caves etc and did I say pubs !!! Thoroughly recommend a day there. Hour and a quarter drive Stone/Leek/ Buxton route so nice drive too!!

Nice idea for a thread.

I'm not sure I'll be able to contribute very much, but would certainly welcome some suggestions.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Cannock Chase is obvious as a decent day out and good exercise.

A little further afield then I quite like Severn Valley Railway. The Engine House there is well worth a look and the cafe there does a decent fish and chips.

Kinver Edge is also a nice place to visit with a selection of decent pubs nearby.

If you want a walk in the Castleton area, walk to Edale and back over Hollins Cross. Edale's lovely too.

Another good one is looking for all the lost cats and dogs and stolen bikes on Facebook

I'm sure I've said this somewhere before but I love National Trust places, we have passes and use them regularly, it's less than £10 per month for 2 adults and up to 5 kids - I think around £6 for an individual but they're great and you can use them over and over again.

We take the kids most sunny days, walk for miles, usually take a picnic , a fab day out for the cost of a few sandwiches and bags of crisps and the diesel in the car - not strictly true as we don't make it past the ice cream counter very often without making a purchase.

I went with friends last week to Trentham Gardens and loved it, £40 of Tesco club card vouchers later and we are all signed up for annual passes (2 adults and 2 kids).

Don't get me wrong, we do the obligatory cinema trips, Alton Towers, Blackpool/seaside stuff as well but the best days out for me are the ones where the kids are worn out at the end of them and I've hardly spent any money.
