Morning all!

i was wondering if anyone can be of help please?

Trying to find some history on a property / building in Stafford but cant seem to find any helpful links.

I have the post code and number, but no luck so far.

Any help or pointers in the right direction would be a great help.

Cheers in advance :)

I get a thing popping up on Facebook occasionally that claims to be able to give you the history of your house - I've never pursued it, but I'll make a note next time.

If it’s a residential property you should be able to get the census records online

Edit : someone has already said that:embarrass:

Depends on how old the property is. The main "family history" sites, Ancestry/Find My Past & The Genealogists, have census records from 1841 to 1911 (the 1921 census records will be available in 2022). FmP and Ancestry have the 1939 Register and The Genealogist has the mid 19th century Tithe Apportionment Maps & Records. All 3 sites have other records which might be of help, but all three are subscription sites and come expensive. Land Registry normally doen't have much historical stuff, just recent records and only for properties which have been sold since the mid 1990s. Typing the address or postcode into A2A might produce something (https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a ) as might a search on TNA (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ ). The property deeds might have survived but could be almost anywhere, in the hands of the solicitors for the last purchasers of the property, deposited in the local record office (but probably the local records office where the solicitors are based rather than where the property is situated) or chucked in the bin. Best bet is to enquire in the County Records Office (behind William Salt).

I notice a house down my road now has a little poppy shape plaque on it, something about a soldier who died in the war having lived there. Memory not great so not sure which war but I love the idea of this. Anyone know how getting these plaques comes about? Owner instigated or some other organisation?

WOW!!

Really appriciate the advise on here for this thread. The reason for it is I am looking at purchasing my first home and I was curious about the history of the house as it backs onto what is now GE Transformers site. I suspect that it was built initially for the engineers who worked on the site?

It looks to be cira 1930's build and I'm just interested on the former owners etc from when it was first built through to today.

I have tried the link that everyone has kindly suggested, but they seem to be for individuals rather that the property itself. It would also be interesting to see if any former owners / occupiers of the property served in any of the forces as I'd also like to honour them by one of the poppy plaques.

Congratulations! If it's the area I'm thinking of, I believe it used to be called The Colony by the locals... (the locals being my parents). I am sure there are plenty of residents in the area who have been there long enough to know the history, hopefully you'll have friendly neighbours.

When I bought my house in 1980, the search produced a list of the three previous owners.

I knew a few people who lived on the factory side of Salt Avenue, if you do get any names..

Cheers Lucy, We will definately be reducing the average age in the local area, very quiet round them parts haha!

Time to get on that ladder finally :)

I would be interesting who lived there previously as we were told it was formally a half way house. Needs some work doing, but not a massive amount.

Remember age doesn't mean you aren't partial to belting house music through your neighbours wall at 2am!

What a superb pair of maps there....though I think the property on Salt Avenue appears on the lower map.

You are right @Gramaisc it is one of the roads that you wouldn't go down unless you either lived there or knew some one who livd there.

Especially if you are a 60+ recluse smokin weed and listening to happy hardcore music at 4am, much like a former neighbour that I'm sure you may remember?

I wouldn't be belting out the spiritual thing that is House music at 2am.....I'd stop at midnight haha!
