I should really start using my canon 500D more.

Whats so funny is that ive got a telephoto lens on that that could zoom in on a gnats bollock over a mile away , yet the moment i fly the drone with a camera on it thats only as good as a mobile phone cam everyone gives it the 'privacy chant' lol.
We had to scrap a webcam on the new build of the college because people complained you could see kids on the park. The fact that it was almost impossible to distinguish between a kid and a bin seemed irrelevant :(

Spoken to 2 more people today that said low end DSLRs are becoming redundant. One said upgrade my phone, the other suggested a point and click with hideous zoom like a Nikon B700 or P900. I am still confused, I need to consider what I really want to do before I buy a very expensive paperweight.

There is a very good chance that exactly what you want does exist now, you just need to know what it is that you want and then find the one that matches those requirements.

I discovered that when I was needing to replace my compact camera, in the end I had to just get the same thing again.

I totally agree. I vary between carrying my canon DSLR, my little pocket Pentax and my phone.

Most times my phone is fine apart from long distance or fast action Superbike piccies.

On my recent Scotland trip I accidentally left my Canon in the hotel in Edinburgh and didn't really miss it until the Superbikes on the Sunday. All photos were on my phone and I'm quite pleased with them.

Luckily the hotel found my Canon and kept it safe.

Having grown up with 'real' cameras, I just miss the discipline of thinking about each shot.

What I would really like is a CCD insert that would fit in a 35mm film camera.

I only use the phone camera when I need to carry something small,

I keep the compact in the car, just in case - and it is particularly useful for "crowded situations", railway exhibitions, etc. The 270 degree lens rotation is sometimes useful for taking pictures from above head-height and arms' length.

I do find that 90% of my current usage is with the DSLR and 99% of that is with the standard lens. Not being a full-size sensor, the 18/55mm lens is more like a 28/80mm in 35mm terms, so it covers most stuff.

I can't get an iphone, I just can't, so looking at android phones. Anyone used a P20 Pro? It's a bit bigger than I'm used to (ooer) but I think I could get used to it.

Why can’t you get an iPhone?

I hate the os. I don't know why but I just don't get on with it, had to use several idevices at work and just really hated doing so. Got to the point I took over all android and the other guy did the apple ones, even though it meant I got 80% of the work!

Plus they are very expensive for the hardware involved .

If you don't like iOS then they aren't for you. I'm the other way, I've used (and have) Android and think they are awful.

As for price, that's up to the purchaser. I think the hardware is excellent quality compared to other phones but that's just my opinion.

So I ended up just changing phone, got a P20 pro. Having some fun with it apart from over exposure, if I want it to pick out detail in the darker areas of a pic it makes the greens especially vibrant in the rest of it. Any way to address this or do I just have to live with it? I've turned off all the auto stuff I can find (it did have a weird AI mode that essentially put filters on every shot, why is that on by default?). Take these 2 for example, virtually the same shot but more sky to balance in one. The colour difference is quite pronounced!

My 18-55 lens wouldn't go past 45. OH took it apart last night, realised the circuit board had slipped so fixed that, but then promptly broke the ribbon cable for the bayonet mount. Only going to take 2 months for a new one to come from China. I'll be taking all my holiday snaps with my prime lens I think.
