Now the ground's softened up a bit, they've got the mounted unit out.

Phew!

I thought I was going to get my own picture just now. I approached a traffic light just as it went amber and thought I was at the good side of borderline for running it - so I did.The junction has an allowance for the difficulty that artics have in taking the sharp corner, so it has a good overlap on the light sequence and fair visibility - I knew that I ought to be alright.

If I had made better use of the visibility, I might have noticed the squad car at the front of the waiting queue, and I might have changed my assessment of the validity of my position, However, I was committed by the time I actually saw them, so I elected to bluff it out.

As I straightened up after the turn, a glance in the mirror revealed that the lads had lit the car up and were proceeding in my direction, without any of the casualness that they generally display when just scouting for business. I elected not to try to outrun them and, seeing that the approaching traffic was suitable, I gave them the opportunity to pass me - which they did, and then made it plain that the object of their interest was the car in front of me. They then pulled it over and got out to interrogate the driver.

I decided not to get a pictorial record of the scene of my non-crime.

The car in question was a 12-year-old red Audi A4. He had pulled out on me about a mile before the event, producing enough smoke for me to suspect that the trigger for the ANPR had quite likely been the lack of a current test certificate, and possibly, other paperwork issues...

It was immaculately clean and very shiny, but that may not have been taken into account, I suspect.

I drove out of the town at no more than 31mph.

Accused of fowl play?
The Twitter post ended up regurgitating all of the swan-based jokes from the whole of human history.

They have swan-related incidents most weeks, often as a result of them mistaking wet roads for waterways.

And, being a republic, they are not subject to the authority of the Head of State, I suppose, so they just go a bit feral.

It's only a matter of time before one fails the breathalyser.
