My cars MOT today, it's not a really old car but the mileage is getting pretty high due to my daily commute to Leamington Spa. Dreading the impending cost.

Try not to worry.
Mines 17 year old , i do sod all work on it ... it would be lucky if it gets a jetwash a year.

4 MOTS later and all i have had is a new battery and a wiper blade.

Only Paid just over a grand for it and its seen a lot newer having to be scrapped ;)

Been watching this ship on the plot for a few days since she was released from Gibraltar. It's the enormous tanker Grace 1 we grabbed at the request of the US and caused some considerable hassle in the Hormuz Straits (entrance to the Persian Gulf, seriously important seaway.) Upon release it changed its name to the Adrian Darya and head for Greece via the Messina Strait (which had to be a no no, a ship that size in that strait, and yes I have been through it, is not advised.) Then it changed its direction to Turkey and passed north of Cyprus.
Now it's sort of dawdling about off the Syrian Coast with no real fixed abode.
So who gives a shit ? … well … Russia headed by a self appointed nutjob, the US headed by a moron. This John le Carré novel has got World War 3 written all over it. (I'm naturally pessimistic on Sunday nights. :teef:)
Of course this plot could be hacked by Vlad and his boys … you can only hope it isn't the GRU hacking it though given their track record to date.

it might stop us worrying about Brexit for a day or two, shit, that's gotta be worth something. :heyhey:

Some of you may remember me talking about Norman, my lovely friend from Haughton.
He’s 94 and has become a bit of a local celebrity since his return from the Normandy trip.

Nearly two years ago he gave me his memoirs to read.
It was a huge A4 file, typed out by him, unedited.

I started slowly, probably out of politeness, but then a little way in, I kept reading and reading, totally mesmerised.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, he came round today. His book has been published and he’s brought me a copy with a lovely heartfelt hand written message inside.
The only downside is that in the editing process they’ve missed out some of the best bits (according to Norman himself). I’m so glad that I read the long version. It was fascinating.

How many people get to be a published author at 94?

I went to Norman’s book signing session today, people queuing up to buy his book which he happily signed for them.

I’ve now read the edited version and aside from a few minor things left out, it’s pretty much the same as the version that I read a few years ago.
A thoroughly enjoyable read, fascinating, touching and funny. I recommend it to anyone.
He really has had the most interesting life.
An amazing man.
The book is available on Amazon.

Magic piece of kit. I have over 500 books in my home, but it's a small space .. and getting smaller by the month. So the Kindle (all of the apps, it's on two tablets and two phones as well) gives me the feline swinging space.
Never ever get caught with just one stick !!

I’m baffled by what I’ve seen today.

Our office has pretty shit plasterboard walls, you can’t just pop a screw in like you can some walls for even the lightest stuff, it just disintegrates the wall. So I have the heftier metal plugs that expand when you tighten the screw, happy days

But today I was tasked with helping a friend put up a shelf. I’d already put a mirror up elsewhere in that flat on a false wall and it was quite happy with just a screw, no plug (trust me it wasn’t moving). But for the shelf I brought the expanding metal plugs along.

Which proceeded to just eat the wall. The first one went in just fine, as it was near a stud I think. But the next two just didn’t grip at all and ate the entire surface away and into the crumbly plasterboard underneath. Seems the surface wasn’t actually attached to the underlying thicker surface, it was just a very thin (1-2mm) layer barely attached to the underlying board. To the point that I could prod the wall and see it moving back and forth away from the plasterboard.

So the surface was nowhere near thick enough for the plug to grip on and just fell apart.

Apparently I’ve found a worse plasterboard wall than the cheap shite in our office.

Why would you build a house wall with that? You’re never hanging anything on it. Even a new build made of paper and hope doesn’t have that problem.

Surely this isn’t a normal thing to do?

I’m not sure how much I trust that wall at all to be honest. Maybe those bigger backing clamps perhaps but how do you get them into the cavity without them dropping to the floor?

Good for use on holes that have become slightly enlarged for whatever reason.

Not for internal use

Sounds like the tiles in my bathroom, they aren't fixed to the wall they just seem to to be held up by the grout between them. If you push slightly on the wall the whole thing moves. They've fallen off behind the loo, the plaster is still pristine the stuff is just on the back of the tiles and doesn't even look like they made contact with the wall at all.
