Distant I think is the key operator here. You have to go back to the mid 1600's before Cash (John R) had any Scottish in his line. So that may be where Cash (William) might be making his claim. I cant see the detail as its behind a paywall.

Best I can find on the family history sites to which I subscribe. Johnny Cash's ancestor William Cash was born in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland 2 June 1653 and emigrated to Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father was William Caishe/Cash b 1610 Fife, Scotland. Can't take it back further than that but Johnny Cash was convinced that his family went back to an earldom that was abolished before 1600 and through that to Malcolm III king of Scotland. With the same sources I can't trace Bill Cash back beyond his grandfather.

Not long after Johnny Cash died a US pharmaceutical approached the family about using his song ‘Ring of Fire’ in a (wait for it !) haemorrhoids commercial.
The family declined.

This rather suggests that William jnr is, ahem, a bit economical with the truth.

The apple really does not fall far from that family tree.
