Are railway bars ever “heaving”? They’re usually for a quick pint whilst waiting for a delayed train, not for a night out.

Stoke is a small station, i’m pretty sure most people will spot it in its current location.
The far end of this was a pub at one time.

At times, it wasn't heaving, but mostly because there wasn't room to heave.

There was a mail train that arrived around "closing time" and the sorters would have about fifteen minutes whilst the engine swapped ends. The landlady would know who would be on the shift that night and would have two pints for each ready on the bar.

It was important to know where yours was, as, should the Guards be giving anybody a lift to the station, the system was that they should not be seen to ignore the place being open after hours, so the main switch would be flipped, if they hooted as they came over the bridge - the nearest streetlight was twenty miles away in those days and the darkness was total.

The ones at Paddington, Edinburgh and Leeds are always busy as are the real ale bars at Doncaster and on the route to Leeds when I've been to them.

Reminds me of an old pub out in the fens, used to close between 3pm & 4pm on a Thursday which was when the police patrol car drove past

Just want to say a little hurrah for this place!

Admittedly I've only been twice, the last two Boxing Days to meet a dear friend!

The atmosphere is amazing! It reminds me of a cosy hipster (but not dickhead hipster) bar in Manchester it's the perfect balance of atmosphere, good beer / cider selection and tasty food!

I know it's a bit out the way but if I lived in Stafford I would convince all my friends to go here rather than anywhere in the town centre!!

Thoughts?? Xxx

Well, it's not quite the same as being dressed as a bumble-bee in the Hand and Cleaver.

Boxing Day is that day when all those who escaped their home town, return and reminisce

It's always the pretty ones who leave

I've only been once ,a couple of days after it first opened , and was so packed that we struggled finding standing room , never mind finding a seat or table to put our drinks on. We only stayed for the one drink and despite it only being 15 minutes walk away have never ventured back in since.

Looks very popular though, and I like the fact they allow dogs in. Might give it another visit sometime in the future, but would just steer away from holiday times etc when it's packed.

I like it too. I don't live anywhere near it but each time I've been in, there's been a lovely atmosphere which is different to that of a typical estate pub.

The very first time i went, i realised that the person who had taken my order had completely forgotten me.

I contemplated waiting until she remembered that she'd forgotten me, but even though it wasn't excusable due to busyness - it was midday, mid-week, with about three tables full - i eventually just walked out having paid for a coffee i never saw. I don't tend to be completely overlooked in that way, but it wasn't the first time.

Shit happens.

I've actually seen that happen there a couple of times, both involving the same member of staff. Not happened to me yet though, so can't complain.

We called in for the first time the Friday before Christmas with the youngest offspring. She enjoyed getting to know the canine locals, we had v tasty grub. Both said if/when we get a dog it’s the perfect place to take a walk to for a couple of pints, especially as it’s downhill on the way home. Very nice indeed, great atmosphere.

Been for breakfast a number of times now - after a couple of episodes of duff service in the early days (quite possibly the same person mentioned previously) the last few times have been more than pleasant. Although........ how on earth can you have a breakfast without beans?? :shifty:
