We were sat in a spoons in Poole, Dorset and messaging son. He asked us the table number and a couple of pints magically appeared. :D

Had to refuse to tell him my table number in the airport whilst eating my full english at 3am . Didn't fancy having a pint of cider appearing at the table at that time of the morning.

Racking my brains trying to remember the name of the Menthol ciggies around in the 70's.

Son just had to buy menthol filters , as our local shop hadn't got the normal ones, so he's given me a taste of the filter....brought back memories. Just can't remember the name of the packets we used to buy.

They don't seem to be on googles radar..... anyone remember them?

I believe that you may only have until May before menthol cigarettes are banned.

Aaaah thanks @Gramaisc :up:

We always thought the menthol ones were more 'less detrimental' back in the day.

Son doesn't normally smoke menthol , but our local shop only had those filters.

He says normal rolling tabacco is going to be banned then as well?? (Might help his efforts to give up..........)

Menthol ciggerettes will be banned & out of production in May this year.

ST16 Represent.
Small packets of rolling tobacco too, so to discourage young smokers. I believe large packets are not subject to the ban.

Apparently 'skinny cigerettes' too, no idea what they are though.

All menthol filters are also banned.

The ban comes from EU tobacco product directive laws, but we will have left the EU by May.....

After several decades, i have finally treated myself to a Shinto rasp - it seems that their instruction leaflet may also go back several decades, to the time when Japanese attempts at English were less perfect than than are today.

I can look forward to "DIY at home by a standing tool".

And 'plywood' is one word. (As is 'plasterboard')

But, still a good bit better than our Japanese would be, I suspect...


However, they have spelled 'aluminium' properly, not falling in line with the American occupying forces.


They've been making these things, totally unchanged, for as long as I can remember - typical Japanese - make it right, then just keep doing it.

The manufacturers themselves make no virtually effort at selling them at all, it sells itself, it's hard to find anything about them, other than from retailers who stock them.

I'm wondering whether sons (past) Japanese girlfriend ever passed her uni exams in English , if she used the proper english spelling and phrases that she learnt from us whilst staying here for 5 weeks. She had american teachers , and was most confused when we corrected her spelling and what she called things.....


Feeling rather ill since yesterday , and hoping it's just the fluid in my middle ear that is making me keep feeling sick and feeling like I'm falling 4ft every so often. Rather scary!

The current atmospheric pressure fluctuations won't help with a bunged-up ear situation.

This reminds me of a piece of Japanese equipment on a ship many years ago called a 'cargo loading list indicator.' Basically a series of horizontal green and red lights mounted on the mast and indicating the ships list during loading. (Green for Starboard, Red for Port .. easy way to remember this is 'Ruby Red Port.') When loading bulk cargo such as iron ore, which can pour into the hatch at literally thousands of tons per hour, you have to observe the ship's list to be sure you're loading evenly, so as to not unduly stress the ship.

This listometer went south and I was asked to fix it. I dug out the manual, and then swept immediately to the 'maintenance and trouble shooting page.' The whole thing was driven by a conductive weight hanging in a magnetic field in a small housing on the bridge. In interpreted Japanese the page read as follows:

"This unit, being fastened to the bulkhead, therefore requiring no maintenance or repair."

(A lot of f****** use that was … :?:)

It got fixed, but I can't deny I was describing Japanese technical manuals with some degree of Ango-Saxon vocabulary at the time.

Finding some of our local Co-op staff most ignorant lately! Bit fed up of them talking to to each other whilst putting the goods through, handing me my receipt whilst turning around to continue their conversation with a work colleague, no thank you or anything despite me saying it, and not even acknowledging my "Thank-you, goodbye" . :ohno:

The only way these places learn is when it hits them in the wallet.

You mean, they can speak? I usually just get a grunt if I use the Co-op I think you are referring to.

The Co-ops nearer me on the Stone Road, Holmcroft or Redhill all have good customer focused staff but I agree with earlier posts that they are quite expensive for little perceivable quality so only use them by exception.

Only go when I'm desperate for something and haven't got the car. I needed some milk and felt too ill to walk down to Aldi this time. Otherwise I would have kept walking like I usually do and paid 40p less for it at the same time.
