We’re all absolutely fine, husband has a small burn and definitely spent too long breathing in the thick smoke but apart from feeling a little tight chested he’s fine. Kitchen is going to take a while to sort though.
This has been over a month now, does anyone have any idea how @peggy's husband is? Is the lady herself ok?

I went to a hardware store off silkmore lane yesterday. Its brilliant. Great customer service and cheaper than b&q. I reckon I saved about £10 - 15 on the goods that I purchased yesterday compared to the chain d.i.y stores.

I'm annoyed that I've not been to this shop sooner. I always try and support the local independent stores but somehow I missed this one until now. Check it out.

Apologies for the long post but this tradesman deserves lots of praise both for his workmanship and him as a person.

A couple of weeks ago I requested recommendations on someone that could clean my driveway and treat my patio area - a chap was recommended to me - Josh Cooper.

Over the next few days we exchanged messages to confirm the price and to arrange a suitable day for him to carry out the work. He carried out the work today in the freezing cold and in the torrential rain. The work looks fantastic, however that's only partly the reason why I'm writing this post.

A couple of minutes before arriving at my house JC told me that he was in a wheelchair. I've got a feeling he waited to the very last minute to tell me because (maybe) he thought it would influence my decision to employ him. It didn't and it never would have done. I genuinely chose him because he was recommended to me. I hope others see past his disability and employ him for the fantastic service he provides.

His attitude to life is brilliant. A fantastic young man. He is not letting his disability from stopping him doing anything. The world would be a better place if we all shared his 'can do positive' attitude. (As my mom used to always tell me there is no such word as 'can't!'.)

I would have no hesitation in recommending this chap to anyone. I've also invited him to Stafford Rangers fc on Saturday as my VIP guest so I can buy him a well deserved beer or two. He used to follow Rangers but stopped going. Hopefully, I can reignite his passion for Rangers again and it gives me the opportunity to say thank you again!

*I've since read more about JC. He truly is an inspirational young man, who was dealt a horrible hand at the age of 14. My daughter aged 3 (1 year ago) also suffered a terrible injury, which has left her brain damaged. Over the last 18 months she has learnt to walk again, talk, eat and do all the other things she did before, albeit slightly slower. I hope my daughter shares the same outlook on life as JC and never let's anything get in her way.

Would that be the same lad in a wheelchair that I saw cleaning someones car in the summer on our estate , and later saw recommeded as doing a really good job ?

I got a leaflet through the door ages ago and emailed them to see if they could help with a purchase, but unfortunately on that occassion they couldn't provide the item. But was so impressed with how they responded promptly and in such a friendly manner, that I vowed to visit the shop for any future hardware purchases required.

Skill points to the man who served me in The Works today , and over the last couple of days as well. Great customer service

I'd bought some books the other day. When I went yesterday to collect a 'Click & Collect' I was entitled to 10% off any other purchases in store whilst collecting my my order. So made the most of the savings and bought more books. Got home to find one was the same book I'd bought the other day. Felt a bit cheeky taking both copies down with my receipts today and asking if I could possibly change one of them. ( and worrying about it all night, wondering if I should or shouldn't try to get it exchanged whilst going to town for my currency anyway)

Absolutely no problem whatsoever ! :) Service with a smile, and told to just grab another one to exchange it with.

I know it’s not my favourite type of shop but I noticed the furniture shop opposite McDonalds has a big “we do not refund” sign on the wall. This type of sign is illegal. If I thought for one minute the trading standards people in Stafford would give a toss I’d report it, as they won’t I’ll just give them a cuffy and hope someone else sorts them out.

Genuinely illegal - it goes against the Sale of Goods Act and the Consumer Rights Act - it must include the phrase "This does not affect your statutory rights" where, of course you can get a refund if there is something wrong or the product was mis sold or not fit for purpose. The sign is, therefore denying the customers their statutory rights. Breaches of trading standards law are criminal offences, not civil offences and can be prosecuted in the Magistrates' Court or Crown Court.

I think unlawful is closer to what you mean

illegal

adjective
adjective: illegal
  1. contrary to or forbidden by law, especially criminal law
Unlawful is contrary to law, not particularly criminal law and covers more Civil offences (at least that's what I remember from my studies many, many moons ago)
