Mmm, by pure chance*.they've just stopped me again, within a couple of hundred yards of the same place and close to the fortieth anniversary of the above event.Many Irish people will pronounce their own names, particularly surnames, differently when on the Big Island, to avoid confusing the "natives" and having to correct things every few minutes. I do it myself - it can have unfortunate consequences, such as getting my own name wrong at a Garda checkpoint and having to correct myself - I got away with that, because the interrogator knew my uncle.
* Of course, they could be reading the Forum...
The one who stopped me looked about thirteen - there is no way I would have served her alcohol, even if she had plausible-looking ID.
