Many Irish people will pronounce their own names, particularly surnames, differently when on the Big Island, to avoid confusing the "natives" and having to correct things every few minutes. I do it myself - it can have unfortunate consequences, such as getting my own name wrong at a Garda checkpoint and having to correct myself - I got away with that, because the interrogator knew my uncle.
Mmm, by pure chance*.they've just stopped me again, within a couple of hundred yards of the same place and close to the fortieth anniversary of the above event.

* Of course, they could be reading the Forum... :ninja:

The one who stopped me looked about thirteen - there is no way I would have served her alcohol, even if she had plausible-looking ID.

.. a distinct mains buzz in the back room, which has quite a bit of mains-powered stuff in it.

Locating the source has been an issue, it doesn't seem very directionally located.

So, I set about isolating the source.

A period of systematically turning off and disconnecting everything in there has left me believing that next-door have placed a fish tank against the wall and it's their air pump that I'm hearing...

Heavily armed American gun nuts converged on Richmond, Virginia where that state wants to introduce limited gun control laws (very limited by our standards.) One guy, complete with AR15, flak jacket and baseball cap was told by a reporter: "But thousands die in this county of gun related incidents."
His reply: "Come on, thousands die of heart attacks."

One of the Richmond Gun protesters was blatantly carrying a .50 calibre Barrett sniper rifle. A weapon quite capable of shooting you through a brick wall at ranges up to a mile. He's allowed to do this because he's a licenced gun dealer, and he says: "It's no different from carrying a hammer."
I'm starting to think apocalyptic climate change might not be such a bad idea.

I bought my first car at Attwoods - a secondhand 1956 Morris Minor. The trip home was my first time driving unaccompanied and felt so weird.

Am I right in thinking Attwoods was approx. where the Eago tile shop now is ? Also seem to remember they had petrol pumps which were alongside the Lichfield road, actually mounted on the pavement (!)

(Is the motorcycle a New Imperial ?)

I remember the pumps always* being where the canopy still stands for the dry cleaner's premises now.

There was a bit of realignment when the Queensway and the roundabout were built.

It was a Jet supplier at one time, I recall.

But, they will have had an earlier existence, I'm sure.
