What is this for?

Found in an upper kitchen cupboard when moving into an empty, pre-owned house. Screwed to the bottom of the cupboard. Apparently home-made. Slots seem too skinny to safely use to lean plates against the end wall.

The central rib presumably has some function, or it wouldn't need to be there.

The lath at the back may, or may not, be part of the whole thing.

My parent used to have a wooden thing with slats on the bottom shelf of their pantry cupboard. Never knew why though, it was just there with loaves of bread etc sitting on it.
(Theirs was loose though, as remember sweeping crumbs from under it....)

Yeah, the slatted breadboard thing I've seen, but it generally can be lifted off an underlying box affair to get the crumbs out and it wouldn't be very ergonomic fitted in a cupboard.

Breadcrumbs in the slots, particularly the far side of the central rib, would be awkward to remove.

Possibly so that things weren't sitting directly on the shelf & had air circulating underneath??
Possibly...

Is it big enough for standing up Tin baking tray's, or small enough to stand up rows of packet sauces?

For baking trays, I would think that the central rib would be a problem, rather than an asset.

For packets, it would be a bit of an issue to hunt for one in the back row.

Back to the 'air circulation issue' - would it not just be easier (and better) to put a cooling rack there?

I was thinking that as well.
That seems possible, but it's a lot of pan lids, although you wouldn't necessarily be using every slot, just the next available appropriate one, I suppose.

If it was for pan lids, generally being circular, then I would think that a rail at the front would soon become a worthwhile modification, to stop them rolling out when you open the door.

There's a hole underneath and they just screwed what ever was to hand over the top? Seems to be how my landlord has done some of my repairs considering the state of my bathroom floor I'm unfortunately finding out.

It sits on top of a washing machine to enhance the enjoyment of those who choose to sit on it through the spin cycle. (cough).:heyhey:
