So if shielding, social distancing and self isolation isn't a suitable way to exit lockdown how do we? What other options do we have?
It is, only you want everyone back at work tomorrow, regardless of whether its safe or not.

You also seem to think that every worker has been furloughed. We haven't, we've been put at great risk with no choice to self isolate. We've watched our friends & colleagues catch this terrible virus, we've been terrified that we've taken it home to our own family's. We've sat on the carpark at work/in the canteen/at home after work and cried floods of tears as we are so stressed. We've been heartbroken because members of our own household (my 14yr old daughter) won't stay in the same room as us as they don't know what bugs we have brought home with us. We've had to listen to people tell us that 'it's your job, get on with it', we'll it's not, I didn't sign up for this, I did not sign up to work through a pandemic when other people can not abide by simple rules to keep EVERYBODY SAFE.... but I've gone & done my job every single day, I've worked extratime, and overtime, I've covered people's shifts that are fortunate enough to be able to self isolate, I've stayed away from other family members (my parents, 2 older sons & my grandson) to keep everyone safe only to have neighbours hold bbq's and invite the extended family & other neighbours round...

You really seem to have no idea of real life....

There's lots of people, like littleme, putting their life on the line for the rest of us.

I can work from home, in fact I don't think I'll be in the office again this year. The least I can do is stay here so that when I do have to go to littleme's place of work I'm less likely to be carrying the nasty virus.

I want to get back to some sort or normality in a safe manor which I believe can be achieved with the appropriate control measures in place. my employer Has done a lot to keep people safe. PPE is available to all employees. changes made to working practices to keep 2m apart individual bottles of hand sanitizer. posters 2m distance ensures your existance Just to name few at no point did I feel at risk.
If you feel your employer isn't doing enough to keep you safe you should raise these with your employer every one has the right to feel safe whilst doing there job

If you work in a shop, how do you keep safe when people don't observe the distancing measures?
The distancing is really only a reduction measure, not elimination, important though it is. Same with the generally available PPE.

And there is quite a difference between an organised interaction with a few people you know in a closed environment and dealing with a continuously changing mob of rabid shoppers who don't give a toss about you and are just bent on getting the last toilet roll - for hours on end.

when the lockdown is lifted nobody will force you to leave your home. if you don't think it's appropriate you can continue your life in lockdown.

This comment beggars belief in it’s ignorance, selfishness and total lack of respect for others.

I’m guessing @cj1 that you are young and healthy, quite happy to take the risk of getting it because you might just be ill for a week or two, not much chance of dying?
Would you be so keen to get back to work if you caught it then you had a very high risk of dying?
Because you are ok, you don’t mind others dying?
Do you have any idea how callous you sound?

When/ If the lockdown is lifted there are going to be thousands of people in a terrible dilemma.
People who aren’t on the scrap heap, who do valuable work (currently from home) respected members of society.

People who may have a condition such as heart problems, diabetic, had a transplant.
People who are now vulnerable and can’t suddenly work in an office, go to a canteen for lunch, sit on a train, go to meetings.

I don’t know what the answer is, but what I do know is this.
Writing off huge swathes of the community is massively lacking in basic humanity.

Surely you have to be careful about these statistics. Sweden has a population of about 10 million, and is considerably larger as a country than the UK. Now I realise there are a lot of variables thrown into that, but none of these variables seem to count when some point has to be made, and that's a political point rather than a scientific one.

(Politicians use numbers when it suits them, when it doesn't, they're kicked into touch.)

yes, there are many variables but it looks like Sweden has done what many thought wasn't possible. it shows if you give people the information they need populations are capable of doing the right thing for the collective good of everyone. like the UK there not out of the woods yet but at present, it's looking promising.
