But larger class sizes defeats the point of social distancing.....
They won't be social distancing. There's not a lot of point in them going back to school if they're going to "social-distance" (at least any more than are attending school at the moment).

And as someone above has said, come the middle of June, there's not much gets done in the 5 weeks that remain, certainly for some year groups.

I haven't given up on any of my students.
It was just the chasing-up of some of the students that they'd given up on. As they say "You can lead a horse to water ....".

ETA I'd say this was good use of the teacher's time. There's probably a lesson there about the 80:20 Rule / Pareto Principal - 80% of the "chasing up" time being spent on 20% of the students.

I guess you were a teacher and a front line worker in a previous life?

Nope. Apart from 2 years, all of my 37 years in employment were spent working in ICT in the public sector.

But my wife is a retired teacher and most of her friends are classroom workers.

37? Damn, I'll be lucky to retire after 50!

I think they were glad to get rid of me.

ETA The death rate is heading in the right direction, but painfully slowly. It's reducing by about 30% per week at the moment, and looking at the graph, the rate has halved in about 24 days. 861/day on April 10th; 431/day today.

693 deaths announced today I'm very sorry to say. Although presumably some of those are from over the weekend.
