I have been set a challenge.
A serious challenge.
The prize?
A pair of seriously nice shoes.

Now I want to add that no one is stopping me from just buying said 'seriously nice shoes' but I can't justify the price so I just talk about wanting them ALL THE TIME!

So the husband suggested that IF I completed a 5K run - I should buy the shoes as my 'prize'

I agreed. I'd also had 4 ciders and now regret it...

Who's with me!? xxx

I was keeping really fit during lockdown until I had a week off work and my routine has gone out of the window.

Use your commute, when I am at working I'm cycling in the morning and running in the evening, it's helping make me transition from home to work and vice versa. I've knocked over a minute a mile off my running pace too.

@That-Crazy-Rat-Lady

Never mind the run, please post pictures of seriously nice shoes!

Well this may sound silly but over the last few years I have invested in 'essentials'

I have a 'best' coat, purse and handbag. All for best and worn / used on special occasions.

I * think * I've chosen wisely, they are classic enough to never go out of fashion and good enough quality (hopefully) to last me the rest of my life.

The only thing I don't have is a good pair of heels!

I'm in the process of selling my house, moving to Scotland and starting a whole new life - and I would like some 'seriously nice shoes' to finish my 'best' collection before I go!

I know it's a really odd thought process!

Were it not for the pandemic, I would probably now be sat on a sunbed on a beach in Croatia.

As it is, while my exercise regime has improved over the last 7 weeks, my beer-gut hasn't, and nor has my diet (well, I've nothing to slim down for). I do, however, have quite a nice tan.

My GF has started running with me, or rather running at the same time as me. She's not ran since she last owned a dog, so we're talking several years, and she is self confessed overweight. She's using the couch 2 5k app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phe.couchto5K&hl=en_GB) which I started with last year, and has found it so good she actually looks forward to a run now. She's still not finished, I think she's on week 6 of 9, but is now running over 3k non-stop in about 25 minutes. The trick with this program seems to be that distance is irrelevant, pace is ignored,it is conditioning your body to run for time instead. Once you can run for 30 minutes without stopping you will likely already be close to 4k, so only 25% left to go.

I'm no coach, but if I can offer any pointers I'm happy to help. I hadn't ran since school (so almost 30 years), and have had a few injuries, but I'm almost healed again and clocked in a PB 5k last week of 20:31.

Thank you so much - I think I'll need something like this (I love a good routine!)

And congratulations - your PB sounds unbelievable (are you superhuman!?)

Train 3 times a week for 30 minutes, thats it. Start with mainly brisk walking interspersed with periods of running, those periods get longer each week until you no longer walk. You choose a coach (I used Jo Whiley), and they talk you through it. You can listen to music too, they talk over the top, you just need some headphones you can run in.

As for superhuman, I'm my own worst enemy. I gave up competing with friends on strava, everyone is different and some you just won't beat. Accept that and just race against yourself, I know all my best times and monitor my watch constantly to see where I am! I'm a computer geek so I even monitor my heart rate and average pace over the last 10 seconds to better understand how I'm doing, and I'm never happy unless I'm pushing my limits. Today I just wasn't feeling it and my 5k was 21:45, thats actually my 12th fastest 5k out of 54 ran but I wasn't happy with myself!

I will never be beach body ready, even if I started a diet right now, and only had 500 calories a day, I will still be fat come Christmas. :(

That doesn't mean you can't go on a beach, it's other peoples problem if they don't like it! Social media has given very unrealistic expectations of body shape, I'm a touch under 6' and under 11 stone with a 32" waist and a not terrible set of abs nowadays yet I put on a compression top the other day and resembled the only gay in the village from little britain
